Rogers' Hat Trick Sparks Terriers' Comeback In 5-3 Win Over Yale
![]() Jane Rogers' first career three-goal game propelled the Terriers to a 5-3 win over Yale. (Photo by Rob Klein) It was a tale of two halves, as Yale came out strong, as senior back Erin Tennyson (Highstown, NJ) scored just 2:16 into the game to make the score 1-0. B. U. responded 1:37 later, as Rogers slipped the ball past the Bulldogs' sophomore goalkeeper Krissy Nesburg to knot the game at 1-1. Yale (7-8, 5-3 Ivy League) would then take a two-goal lead, adding two goals at 25:31 and 22:50, both by senior Tovia Martirosian (Richmond, VA), building a 3-1 lead that they would take into the half. As strong as Yale was in the first half was how strong B. U. was to open the second. Sophomore forward Whitney Peabody (Hamilton, MA) took a feed from sophomore midfielder Dalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA) on a broken penalty corner and took an off-balance shot from the left of Nesburg that found the back of the cage to cut Yale's lead to 3-2 at 29:18. The Terriers were awarded a penalty shot at 19:24 that Rogers convincingly converted to tie the score at 3-3. The successful penalty shot was the team's third in four chances this season. B. U. put the game away at 13:16 when a Banuelos shot attempt was batted past a diving Nesburg by Peabody to give the Terriers their first lead of the game at 4-3. Rogers would add her third goal of the game 2:11 later to push the lead to 5-3. It was her first career three-goal game. She now has 83 career points at B. U., a total which moves her into fifth place on the team's all-time scoring list. "This win was a tribute to this team's resiliency," said B. U. head coach Sally Starr. "We were coming off three loses in a row, and I think a team with a lot less character would have packed it in at halftime. We've struggled a lot this year, every game has been a battle, so to see us do what we did in this type of a game was huge." Yale had the statistical advantage in the first half, taking 11 shots to B. U.'s five, but the Terriers rebounded in the second half, holding an 11-4 advantage. Nesburg was credited with eight saves in the game. B. U.'s junior goalkeeper Susan Harrington stopped nine Bulldog shots, recording her eighth win of the season. The Terriers won despite trailing by two goals in the second half - the third time the team has come from two goals back to be victorious this season. For Banuelos it was the first two-assist game of her career. B. U. claims the second seed in next week's America East Championship, to be held at Northeastern's Sweeney Field starting on Nov. 2. The Terriers, who are making their 12thconference tournament appearance in the 12 years that it has been held, will face Delaware. B. U. won at Delaware, 5-4, in overtime on Sept. 28. The Terriers wrap up their regular season with a game at Harvard on Sunday, Oct. 28. Game time is 1 p.m.
