Dekker Leads Field Hockey to 2-1 Overtime Victory at Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. - The Boston University field hockey team put itself back in the race for the top seed in the America East tournament with a 2-1 overtime victory on the road against Albany on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Suus Dekker scored both Terrier goals, including the game winner just 40 seconds into overtime. BU's victory, combined with Vermont's 4-3 overtime win at New Hampshire, forces a three-way tie for first place in the America East standings with the Terriers, Catamounts and Great Danes. If the Terriers defeat Maine in their regular-season finale on Oct. 28 and Albany earns a road win at Vermont, BU will claim the top seed for the league tournament for the third straight year. The Terriers rebounded nicely from their first home loss of the season on Wednesday against UConn, allowing Albany just one shot on goal on Saturday and holding a 12-2 overall advantage in shots. BU earned four penalty corners in the first half and used the final one to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. A blast from sophomore Holly Wiles was saved initially by Albany goalkeeper Ashley Ross, but Dekker was quick to the rebound and sent the ball to the back of the cage with just 44 seconds left in the opening half. Albany recorded an equalizer on its lone penalty corner of the second half, as freshman Nicole Savage sent home a shot in the 46th minute on assists from classmate Jess Lindsey and sophomore Arlette Westdorp. After coming up short in its attempt to score the game winner in regulation, the Terriers made quick work of the Great Danes in overtime. Junior Pam Spuehler controlled the ball as overtime commenced and dribbled upfield before passing off to classmate Sarah Shute. Shute drew a foul in the circle to quickly give the Terriers a penalty corner. After the initial push from Spuehler, Wiles sent a ball to the cage that was tipped in by Dekker, ending the game just 40 seconds into the extra session. The Terriers will return home to face Dartmouth on Sunday, Oct. 22, for a 3 p.m. contest. The conetest will kick off a three-game homestand to conclude the regular season.
