Terriers Rebound With 3-2 Win Over Ball State As Hubbard Scores Twice
Ann Arbor, Mich. - For the second time in three games, junior midfielder Celeste Hubbard (Detroit, Mich.) scored two goals in a game, this time leading the Boston University field hockey team to victory. Hubbard's two first-half scores paced the Terriers to a 3-2 win over Ball State in a game played at the University of Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 29. Although Ball State (4-3) led B. U. in shots (22-12) and penalty corners (12-5), it was the Terriers who took a 2-0 lead early in the first half. Hubbard scored on a direct corner 8:43 into the contest, with the assists coming from junior midfielder Lindsey Domers (Voorhees, N. J.) and sophomore back Meredith Long (Ocean City, N. J.). Exactly three minutes later, Hubbard doubled the Terriers' advantage with an unassisted score from the left side of Cardinals' goalkeeper Susan McDowell. A goal by Ball State's Jen Strodel made the score 2-1 with 4:48 left in the first half. The Terriers reclaimed their two-goal lead as two freshmen coupled for a score 15 minutes into the second half. Natalie DiSabato (New Albany, Ohio) scored her second goal of the season on a 2-on-1 breakaway with fellow freshman forward Caitlyn Cassara (North Caldwell, N. J.) to make the score 3-1 with 20:17 left. The Cardinals, who were ranked 23rd in this week's NFHCA poll, scored with 9:02 left in the game to once again cut the lead to one, but the Terriers held on for the win, despite being outshot, 15-3, in the second half. BSU also held a 9-0 advantage in corners in the second half. B. U. senior goalkeeper Susan Harrington (Tuftonboro, N. H.) made seven saves. McDowell made three saves for the Cardinals. Kristy Houghton recorded two assists for Ball State. It was Hubbard's second two-goal scoring effort in three games. She also tallied two goals in a 3-2 loss to Dartmouth on Sept. 24. The Terriers, ranked 24th in this week's NFHCA poll, travel to New Haven, Conn. to play Yale on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m., before hosting Rhode Island on Sunday, Sept. 6 in a 3 p.m. game.
