Speuhler, Joyce Enjoy Two-Goal Games In Terriers' 4-1 Win Over Dartmouth

BOXSCORE

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Boston University sprinted to a 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back, defeating Dartmouth, 4-1, in non-conference field hockey action at Jack Barry Field on Saturday, Sept. 25. Freshman Pam Spuehler (Sudbury, Mass.) and senior Jen Joyce (Lititz, Pa.) both scored two goals for the Terriers.

It's the fourth straight win for the Terriers, who improve to 5-3, while Dartmouth falls to 2-5 on the season.

B.U. jumped on top just 2:09 into the game, as sophomore Ashley Parker (Cheshire, Conn.) took a shot on the Big Green net that Spuehler deflected past Dartmouth goalkeeper Lauren Balukjian to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Terriers.

The Terriers doubled their lead at 26:13 as Joyce combined with redshirt freshman Sarah Hudak (Souderton, Pa.) to take advantage of a Dartmouth turnover deep in the Terriers' offensive end. Hudak sent a hard pass to a slashing Joyce, who turned and put it into the cage to make the score 2-0.

B.U. added a third first-half goal with eight minutes remaining in the half when senior back Lauren Vendetti (Ashland, Mass.) directed a penalty corner shot towards the cage that Spuehler deflected past Balukjian.

Less than five minutes into the second half, freshman forward Sarah Shute (Lincolnville, Maine) spotted Joyce alone at the far end of the cage and directed a ball that Joyce tapped into the cage to give the Terriers a 4-0 advantage.

Dartmouth broke the Terriers' shutout bid with a goal by Ashley Choren at 26:11 that made it 4-1.

Spuehler left the game midway through the second half after a ball popped up off the turf and struck her on the nose. She walked off the field but did not return. It was the first multiple-goal game for Spuehler, while Joyce did it for the second time in her career. Joyce solidified her team scoring lead with the two-goal game. She now has five goals and two assists for 12 points.

Spuehler and Joyce each had three shots, as did Choren. B.U. sophomore goalkeeper Erin Prediger (Telford, Pa.) was credited with three saves. Balukjian made four shots for Dartmouth.

The Terriers travel to Princeton, N.J. on Saturday, Oct. 1 for a 4 p.m. game against the Tigers. They then play Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
