U. S. Field Hockey Association Press Release - March 6

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The U. S. Field Hockey Association announced its selections to the 2002 women's national team following open trials at the team's U. S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. Former Boston University field hockey player Robyn Kenney is among the players chosen.

A two-time All-America selection, Kenney joins a squad which features four players who played on the team during the 1996 Olympics, and 16 athletes from last year's team.

It's been quite a year so far for Kenney, who was also selected to the U. S. Under-23 national team in January. Kenney, along with the other 17 members of the national team, will live and train in Virginia Beach in preparation for major international events including the 2002 World Cup and 2004 Olympics.

The U.S. schedule for 2002 includes a three-game World Cup qualifying series with India to decide the final team to advance to the World Cup, Nov. 24 - Dec. 8 in Perth, Australia. Dates for the series have not yet been finalized.

The U.S. team will also travel to Japan, April 29-May 6 for a six-nation tournament with Australia, Germany, Korea, Russia and Japan and will tour New Zealand for a series of games, May 7-19. Back in home in the U.S., the team is tentatively scheduled for a series against top NCAA Division I teams in the early fall before hosting a four nation tournament with England, Germany and a team to be announced, Oct. 6-13 at the U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

Kenney, who played midfielder and back at B. U. from 1997-2000, became the first B.U. player ever to be chosen to the U.S. National Under-20 and Under-21 Field Hockey Teams on two occasions - in 1998 and 1999. In 1998, she became the third B. U. field hockey player ever to be chosen to a U.S. team. Michelle Barnard '96 and Sally Maxwell '89 were each members of the National Under-21 Team.

In her four-year career Kenney, a native of Whitehouse Station, NJ, earn America East All-Conference honors three times, as well as Second Team All-America accolades after the 2000 season, and Third Team honors after the 1999 season. Overall, she scored nine goals and 10 assists for 28 points as a Terrier, starting 84 of the 85 games she played.

As part of her Under-23 National Team duties, Kenney will be competing on various summer teams, which will play weekend tournaments around the country from May through July.
