Women's Basketball Falls to UMBC, 63-57
Box Score / (.pdf) BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team lost control of a tight game late in the first half and never recovered, dropping a 63-57 home contest to UMBC on Thursday evening at Case Gym. The Terriers, who fell to 13-8 overall and 6-4 in America East play, were paced by junior Erica Kovach, who tallied a team-best 15 points. Junior Sharri Rohde tallied a game-best 23 points to help the Retrievers extend their win streak to five games and improve to 13-8 and 5-5 in league play. Rohde added eight rebounds and senior Matea Pender recorded 17 points and seven boards. Sophomore Kasey Devine matched her career high with 13 points and also recorded game highs of nine rebounds and three blocks. Senior Rachael Vanderwal also hauled in nine boards to go along with 12 points and four assists. The Retrievers shot 51.1 percent for the game, including an impressive 56.5-percent showing in the first half. BU made just 35.6 percent of its shots on the night. UMBC's zone defense led to 28 3-point attempts by the Terriers, but the home squad only connected on six of them. The Retrievers also made six 3-pointers, but only needed 12 attempts to do so. A lay-up by Devine with just over six minutes left in the first half caused the ninth lead change of the game and gave BU a 21-20 edge. However, the visitors scored 13 of the next 14 points to take a 33-22 advantage. Vanderwal tallied the last bucket of the half to cut the deficit to 33-24 heading into intermission. in the second half, BU got within four points on two occasions only to watch UMBC regain an 11-point edge on a 3-pointer by Rohde with 4:22 to play. The Terriers did not allow a field goal for the remainder of the contest and went on an 8-2 run to make it a 62-57 affair with 41 seconds left. After a miss by UMBC on the front end of a 1-and-1, BU hustled to the other end and Devine drew a foul to earn a 1-and-1 situation of her own. With 23 seconds left, the sophomore misfired and Pender collected the defensive board. BU never had another shot attempt en route to its second straight home loss. BU will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, when it visits Binghamton for a 7 p.m. contest. Earlier this season in their conference home opener, the Terriers posted a 77-68 victory over the Bearcats.
