Freshman Duo Lead Terriers to 76-65 Conference Win Over Maine

BOXSCORE

BOSTON - Adrienne Norris (Delafield, WI) scored a team-high 17 points and had a team-high 12 rebounds and Larissa Parr (Eau Claire, WI) had 16 points with eight rebounds as the freshmen led the B.U. women's basketball team to a 76-65 win over conference rival Maine on Tuesday night (Feb. 5) at Case Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Terriers have now won five of their last six games and improve to 6-4 in the America East and 13-8 overall.

While both squads would need the first four minutes of the game to get into a shooting rhythm, the majority of the first half was a back-and-fourth shootout.

B.U. jumped out to an early 15-10 lead behind the first of two three-pointers from junior guard Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY) at 10:59.

After trading the lead 10 times in the final nine minutes of the half, Maine held a 40-39 advantage at the break. The Black Bears' Missy Traversi scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half, connecting on 3-of-4 from long range.

Maine shot 54.2 percent from the field in the first half, while B.U. hit 48.5 percent of their field goal attempts.

"I was frustrated with the team at halftime," said Terrier head coach Margaret McKeon. "We can't be giving up 40 points in a half, running and gunning. That's not the way we play. We needed to buckle down and play some defense and limit them to one shot. I thought we did a much better job in the second half."

As the first half was a battle waged on the scoreboard, the Terriers settled down their offense and took advantage of the boards after the break.

Sophomore guard Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) sparked an early second half rally, hitting a three-pointer at 18:29, tying the game at 42-42. B.U. would follow Terhune's lead with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes.

Parr scored six of the 12 points during the run, including a pretty baby hook to give B.U. the lead for good at 44-42.

"Norris and Parr can play with their backs to the basket and score off the dribble drive," said McKeon. "You play them minutes, and they will produce."

Traversi's jumper at 13:40 cut B.U.'s lead to 53-48, but Argentieri pushed a fast break and found Norris wide open for an easy lay-in.

Maine sent the Terriers to the line 12 times in the final two and a half minutes of the game. B.U. hit 9-of-12 to seal its third consecutive victory over the Black Bears.

Terhune finished the game with 15 points, four assists and four steals. Argentieri added 10 points and a game-high seven assists.

Monica Peterson joined Traversi in double digits for Maine, scoring 20 points to go along with her team-high 11 rebounds.

On the night, the Terriers had the advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Black Bears, 38-34.

The Terriers complete their three-game home stand as they host New Hampshire on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 1 p.m.
