Terriers' Late Rally Falls Short, Seawolves Win Conference Battle, 67-60
Stony Brook, NY -Trailing by eight points with two minutes remaining in the game, Alison Argentieri and Adrienne Norris hit two three-pointers to close the gap to two, but the Terrier women's basketball team would not get closer, falling to Stony Brook, 67-60, on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13) in front of 570 at the SB Sports Complex. The Terriers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the opening minutes, as Argentieri hit Dia Dufault (Malone, NY) with a long outlet pass for an easy lay-in at 14:45. Stony Brook pushed the fast break as well, with Sarah Burkett and Erika Shipley both scoring on lay-ups after beating the Terriers' full-court press. B.U. took the lead at 5:19 in the first as Norris (Delafield, WI) scored off a post-up to give the Terriers a 19-18 advantage. When Burkett missed a three-pointer in the next trip down the court, Argentieri (Hornell, NY) grabbed the long rebound and found Dufault who sent a leading pass to Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) for another fast break lay-up to put B.U. up, 21-18. The Terriers would go on to lead by as many as five points in the first half and took a 27-24 advantage into the intermission. B.U. had the momentum to start the second half, as Norris rejected Shipley and Argentieri hit her first of three 3-pointers in the half to give the Terriers their largest lead of the game, 31-25, at 17:54. But the Seawolves, who took just five free throws in the first half, punished the Terriers from the line in the second. B.U. committed 18 fouls after the break, while Stony Brook hit 24 of their 33 chances, including 12-of-13 during a 20-6 Seawolves run. The Terriers made a season-low 57.1 percent of their free throws (16-for-28). Stony Brook led, 50-41, with 7:19 remaining in the game. Shipley led the way for the Seawolves, scoring 15 of her game-high 21 points and connecting on 12-of-12 from the line in the second half. Argentieri sparked the Terrier rally, hitting a three-pointer from the left wing and snagging a steal off the ensuing Stony Brook inbound at 1:08. Norris's three-pointer brought B.U. within two of the Seawolves, 61-59, with 41 seconds remaining in the game. The Terriers fouled Sherry Jordan twice, but Jordan hit just one of four chances from the line. Terhune hit a jumper as the Terriers' trailed, 62-60 with 18 seconds left. But Stony Brook sealed the game from the line, sinking their last six free throws for their sixth straight victory. Argentieri and Terhune each had 15 points and Norris added 13 off the bench for the Terriers, who fall to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the America East. B.U. next hosts cross-town rival Northeastern on Sunday, Jan.20, at 1 p.m.
