BOSTON - Junior guard Rachael Vanderwal (Stoney Creek, ONT), who led the Terriers to a third-place finish at the 2004 State Farm Classic, was named America East Co-Player of the Week on Monday, Jan. 3. Vanderwal shares the award with Northeastern's Maralene Zwarich. The 5-9 point guard tied a career-high with 17 points and had seven rebounds in B.U.'s 66-59 loss to eventual champion Florida in the first round on Dec. 29. In the consolation game, Vanderwal posted her second double double of the season with a 12-point, 10-assist effort in B.U.'s 70-65 win over Florida A&M on Dec. 30. The 10 assists tied a tournament record set by Florida's Amanda Butler in 1990. She has played all 40 minutes of each of the last four games and played a career-high 50 minutes in B.U.'s 89-87 double-overtime loss at La Salle on Dec. 4. A talented playmaker, Vanderwal leads America East in assist-to-turnover ratio (+2.14) and total assists (47). B.U. (5-4, 0-0) opens its 2005 America East schedule with a road game at Hartford (6-3, 0-0) on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 7:00 p.m.
