Terriers Can't Catch Crimson, Fall 70-57
BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman forward Hana Peljto (Brooklyn Park, MN) scored a game-high 20 points as Harvard used an 18-2 run to open the game to defeat the Boston University women's basketball team, 70-57, at Case Gymnasium on Tuesday night (Jan. 2). The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Crimson, who improve to 2-10. The Terriers, who recently completed a December where they went 4-3, their first winning record for a month since March of 1994, fall to 5-7. Peljto added eight rebounds in leading four players in double figures for Harvard. Katie Gates (Overland Park, KS) scored five of the Crimson's first 10 points as Harvard jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead three minutes into the contest. After a B.U. timeout, freshman Marisa Moseley (Springfield, MA) hit a layup to get the Terriers on the board, but Harvard answered with eight straight points to make it 18-2 with 13:28 left in the half. Head coach Margaret McKeon played all five of her freshman at once for an eight minute stretch, and was rewarded with some gritty play, particularly from guards Courtney Jones (Lafayette Hill, PA) and Lashaunda Mitchell (Oyster Bay, NY). Both Jones and Mitchell forced turnovers in the backcourt as the Terriers outscored the Crimson, 9-8 over the eight-minute span. The Terriers forced 28 Crimson turnovers in the game, but could never put together a significant run to close the gap. The closest B.U. would come would be 54-43 with nine minutes left in the game after a three-pointer from junior guard Annie Tomasini (Boston, MA). Tomasini finished with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Junior guard Jennifer Monti (Ellington, CT) hit several clutch baskets in the second half for Harvard, scoring 12 of her 16 points after the break. Senior forward Alison Dixon (Norwood, MA) scored a team-high 15 points for the Terriers, including a three-point play with four seconds left in the game that gave her 1,431 points for her career, moving her into second place on the all-time scoring list at B.U. Dixon passed Jill Sosnak ('95) who scored 1,430 points in 101 career games. It was Dixon's 94th career game. Freshman Katie Terhune (Port Murray, NJ) played 24 minutes, despite a badly bruised ankle, and added nine points. B.U. had 16 steals in the game, led by Moseley and Alison Argentieri (Hornell, NY), who each had four. Harvard, which shot 51 percent from the floor for the game, had 13 steals, led by Gates, who had four. The Terriers will next play New Hampshire on Monday, January 8 at 7 p.m.
