Boston College Edges Boston University, 1-0, In Men's Soccer Action
Sophomore Chris Cleary scored his first goal of the season with just 5:45 to play in regulation to lift the Boston College men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over the host Terriers on Saturday (September 29th). It marked the first home game of the season for B.U., who had a two-game winning streak entering the match. For the Terriers, who are now 4-3-0 this season, it marked just the second time this year they had been shut out. The only previous time came in a 1-0 loss to Connecticut on September 6th. By contrast, they had outscored their opponents, 16-8, in the first six games of the year. In the meantime, the Eagles, who won the Big East title last year and were ranked as high as 13th in the nation earlier this year, improved to 5-2-0. After a scoreless first half in which B.U. outshot BC, 8-2, the Eagles came out and dominated the second half as they outshot the Terriers, 10-3, in the final 45 minutes of action. However, it wasn't until the 84:15 mark that either team was able to score. BC's Ramon Smith had dribbled the ball to the right side of the B.U. box. Terrier goalkeeper Matt Smith came out to smother the ball. However, the ball came loose and found its way to Cleary who had come down the middle of the box. With Smith unable to scramble back into position, Cleary fired the ball into an open net. BC outshot the Terriers, 12-11, while the Terriers had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-1. Smith had eight saves in the Terrier goal, while Danny Caruso earned the win with four saves.
