No. 19 Men's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw with Cornell
BOSTON – The No. 19 Boston University men’s soccer team tied Cornell University, 1-1, at Nickerson Field on Sunday afternoon, as Cornell scored the game-tying goal with six minutes remaining in regulation. The Terriers now stand at 4-1-3 on the season, while the Big Red is currently 1-3-2. Sophomore Jin Oh (Dededo, Guam) scored the first goal of the game in the 70th minute of the match. Classmate Jon Jonsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) crossed the ball as he was coming down the right flank to Petur Sigurdsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland). Sigurdsson flicked it to Oh, who was waiting on the 18-yard line. Oh then blasted a shot into the far right side for his first goal of the season. Cornell’s John Bain knotted the score at one with six minutes remaining in regulation. Matt Devitt crossed the ball from just outside the 18-yard box to Bain, who then collected the ball and slotted into the lower right side for the game-tying goal. Sigurdsson had two opportunities in overtime to seal the victory but Cornell goalkeeper Luca Cerretani made two diving saves to preserve the tie. In the first overtime period, Sigurdsson's diving header forced Cerretani to push the ball over the cross bar. In the second overtime Sigurdsson’s shot to the lower left corner made Cerretani dive to his left and tip it just past the post. During regulation, the Terriers created more offense and nearly put a few in the back of the net. Freshman Samuel Appiah (Obuasi, Ghana) had BU’s first attempt that went just wide, while sophomore Neil Hlavaty’s (Lombard, Ill) corner kick was saved off the goal line by a Cornell defender. Then on the following play, Cornell nearly scored on a corner kick, but Hlavaty was in the right place as he blocked the shot from going in. In the second half, Appiah’s shot in the 72nd minute was punched away by Cerretani, and with one minute remaining in regulation Cornell’s Kiery Tuttle broke away from the BU defense, but goalkeeper Zach Riffett came off his line to cut down the angle and stopped Tuttle mid-stride. The Terriers dominated the statistics holding a 16-6 advantage in shots, while earning 11 corner kicks to Cornell’s one. Appiah and Oh both recorded game-highs with three shots apiece. BU returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when it hosts URI at 7 p.m. The game with Rhode Island is the second of a doubleheader with the women’s soccer team, which hosts Harvard at 4 p.m.
