Men's Soccer Team Drops 2-1 OT Decision To UMass
The Terrier men's soccer team dropped its second heartbreaking decision in five days on Sunday (September 9th) when it lost to host UMass/Amherst, 2-1, in double overtime. On Wednesday, B.U. lost a 1-0 decision at the University of Connecticut. With the loss to the Minutemen, B.U.'s record dropped to 2-2, which is the same record as UMass. It took more than 110 minutes on Sunday to come away with a winner, as UMass' Jeff Deren scored his second goal of the game at 110:03 to send the Minutemen away with the win. The Terriers got on the board first when freshman Fredericho Bianchi placed a beautiful shot from the right side off the far post just out of the reach of UMass goalkeeper Bryan O¹Quinn just before the half. The Minutemen answered the BU goal with a goal in the game¹s 64th minute. The goal came on a penalty kick by Deren at 63:12. The shot was set up when UMass sophomore Ptah Myers broke away on a one-on-one with Terrier junior goalie Matt Smith. Smith fouled Myers inside the penalty box to prevent a sure goal. On the ensuing penalty kick, Deren placed his shot into the upper right corner of the goal. UMass ended the contest in the second 15-minute period as Deren stole a pass deep in BU territory and beat Smith to the right side. For the game, UMass enjoyed a decided advantage in shots, 21-12, while the Terriers dominated on corner kicks, 10-3. Smith finished the game with eight saves, while O'Quinn had three saves in the UMass goal. The Terriers, who have played their first four games of the season on the road, will finally play their first home game this Friday when they host Cornell University at 7:00 p.m.
