Four Terriers Invited To National Junior Hockey Team Evaluation Camp
![]() Justin Maiser Terrier sophomores Justin Maiser (Edina, MN), Brian McConnell (Norfolk), Bryan Miller (Wayne, NJ), and Ryan Whitney (Scituate) are among the 47 hockey players invited to the 2002 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp that will be held August 1-10 at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY. One of the highlights of the camp will be the 2002 USA Hockey Summer Challenge, an exhibition series between two U.S. squads-teams Blue and White and an under-20 select team from Finland. This camp also marks one of the selection processes for the 2003 U.S. National Junior Team that will compete at the IIHF World Junior Championships. The Games are scheduled for December 26, 2002-January 5, 2003 in Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia. ![]() Ryan Whitney Whitney, who is one of 17 defensemen on the list, is accustomed to the process as he was on last year's National Junior Team that posted a 4-1-2 overall record and finished fifth in the Championship that was held in the Czech Republic. Whitney is one of seven players invited to this year's camp who was on last year's Junior Team. As a freshman defenseman for the Terriers last year, Whitney played in 35 games and had 4 goals and 17 assists for 21 points. He was the second-leading scorer among all B.U. defensemen as only senior co-captain Chris Dyment (Reading) was more prolific with 7 goals and 18 assists for 25 points. At season's end, he was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. ![]() Bryan Miller Miller, who saw some action at forward, played defense primarily for the Terriers, and will play along the blue line at the August evaluation camp. Last season, he played in 34 of the Terriers' 38 games and had 4 goals and 15 assists for 19 points. Two of his four goals were game-winners. His best game during the year came against Maine on November 9th when he scored two goals, including the game-winner in a 3-2 overtime victory. For his efforts, he was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week. Maiser and McConnell will be among the 24 forwards attending the camp. ![]() Brian McConnell Last season, McConnell centered the Terriers' first line for much of the season and had 11 goals and 15 assists for 26 points in 38 games. He was the top-scoring freshman on the team, while he tied for third overall. In addition, he was fifth on the team in goals, fifth in power play goals with 4, and third in plus-minus with a +13. As was the case with Whitney, he was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Maiser played in 36 games and had 8 goals and 14 assists for 22 points. The high point of his season came in the Beanpot title game against Northeastern on February 11th. He scored a pair of goals in the Terriers' 5-3 win as they skated off with their record 24th title in the 50-year history of the tournament. Maiser's performance earned him the tournament's MVP and also a spot in Sports Illustrated's Face In the Crowd. In all, Maiser played in six games during February and had 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points, and he was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Month. Over the years, 37 Boston University hockey players have been members of the United States team that participated at the World Junior Championships. At last year's competition in the Czech Republic, Whitney and sophomore Gregg Johnson (Windsor, CT) were on the U.S. Team, while sophomore Frantisek Skladany (Martin, Slovakia) was on the Slovakian Junior Team.
