Tournament Notes
Television | Listen Live

BOSTON - The No. 1 and top-seeded Terriers (25-9-4, 17-7-3 HE) will take on the No. 15 and fourth-seeded University of Nebraska-Omaha (20-14-6, 12-10-6 CCHA) in the first round of the NCAA tournament at the Northeast Regional in Worcester, Mass., on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The victor will advance to play the winner of the Boston College-Miami game on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m., with a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four on the line.

BU is making it’s 29th NCAA appearance (14th in last 16 years) and is hot off the Hockey East Championship, while boasting a six-game win streak and nine-game unbeaten streak with a 20-2-2 record in the last 24 games. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are coming off a pair of losses to Northern Michigan in the CCHA quarterfinals and are now 8-3-4 in their last 15 outings. The two teams have only met four times (never in the NCAAs), with BU holding the 3-1-0 (.750) series advantage, which includes a Terrier victory in the last meeting (4-1) on Dec. 29, 2004.

The Terriers' 29th appearance in the NCAA tournament is second only to Minnesota, which is in the NCAAs for the 30th time. Michigan ties BU with 29 appearances; while Boston College has made it 26 times; Michigan State is at 24; and North Dakota, Wisconsin and Harvard all are in the tournament for the 21st time.

BU enters the Northeast Regional with an overall record of 33-30-0 (.524) in NCAA tournament play. The 33 wins represent the third-highest total in tournament history. The only programs with more victories are Minnesota (49) and Michigan (44), while North Dakota is tied with BU at 33 victories. The Terriers won the title in 1971, 1972, 1978 and 1995. They finished second five times (1950, 1967, 1991, 1994 and 1997), third five times (1951, 1960, 1974, 1975 and 1977) and fourth three times (1953, 1966 and 1976), while there was no consolation game in 1990 and 1993 to determine if BU finished third or fourth.

Since 1992, when the NCAA moved to a regional format, the Terriers have been a number one seed five times (1994, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2006). Meanwhile, BU has been a two seed four times (1993, 1997, 2002 and 2003), a three seed twice (2000 and 2005) and a four seed once (1992). During that time, the Terriers have never been sent west.

BU-UNO SERIES NOTES
BU and UNO have met just four times in program history, all coming in regular-season play since 2001. BU holds the 3-1-0 (.750) series advantage and has won the two most-recent meetings. In a pair of games at the Omaha Civic Center on Dec. 20-21, 2001, the teams split, with BU coming out the 4-1 victor the first night and UNO skating to a 4-3 overtime win the following evening. The Terriers then won the next two meetings, 6-4 on Oct. 25, 2002, and 4-1 on Dec. 29, 2004. The teams have never met in any regular-season or postseason tournaments.

A combination of a three-goal, second-period outburst within a span of 3:09, and a defense that did not give up a single shot in the middle period, lifted the Terriers to a 4-1 win over the visiting RedHawks in the teams' last meeting at Walter Brown Arena on Dec. 29, 2004. UNO got out to the 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal, before the Terriers scored four unanswered goals, including two from current senior David Van der Gulik.

BU-BC SERIES NOTES
The cross-town rivals have met 232 times and the Terriers lead the series, 118-99-15 (.541). BU began playing hockey during the 1917-18 season and played its lone game was against the Eagles. No other opponent has appeared on the Terrier schedule more often. The two teams have played 33 overtime games over the years, and the Terriers are 7-11-15 (.439). Amazingly, there have been just 13 shutouts in the 231-game series, and the Terriers have seven of the 13 (.538). Between 1983 and 2004, the two teams played 81 games in which each team scored at least one goal. When BC blanked BU in 2004, it was the first time in 126 meetings that the Eagles had shut out the Terriers.

The Eagles and Terriers have only played once in the history of the NCAA tournament, in the national title game in 1978 when BU won, 5-3, at the Providence Civic Center.

The Terriers won the regular-season series with the Eagles for the first time since 2001-02 (2-1-0). After the teams each won at home in a weekend series on Dec. 2-3, BU won the decisive third game at Conte Forum on Jan. 27, then went on to top the Eagles, 3-2, in the non-league Beanpot title game and 2-1 (ot) in the league championship.

BU-MIAMI SERIES NOTES
The Terriers and RedHawks have played just twice in program history, as BU won the first-ever meeting on Dec. 28, 1992, by a 4-3 count at the Bradley Center in the Badger Showdown, and Miami posted a 5-1 win in the teams’ most recent meeting on Oct. 8, 2004, at the Nutter Center in the Lefty McFadden Invitational. The teams have never met in postseason tournament play.

The Terriers opened the 2004-05 season on a losing note, dropping a 5-1 decision to Miami on the first night of the Lefty McFadden Invitational on Oct. 8 at the Nutter Center. Ranked 15th in the nation coming into the game, Miami was 3-for-10 and had 12 shots on goal on its man-up advantages and added a fourth goal while skating a man-down. In fact, the RedHawks’ fifth goal came while the teams were skating four-on-four. In the meantime, the Terriers, who were 0-for-9 and had just four shots on goal on their power play, scored their lone goal at even strength after trailing 5-0.
