FIELDS IN THE QUARTERFINALS: Sean Fields went the distance in both games for the Terriers. In addition to his two wins, he had a 2.00 GAA and a .926 save percentage
His 2.00 GAA ties him for second among the goaltenders after the quarterfinals. New Hampshire's Matt Carney and Maine's Matt Yeats also had a 2.00. The leader is UMass/Lowell's Cam McCormick, who enters this weekend's semifinals with an 0.68 GAA. However, Fields is the only goaltender who played both games. McCormick, Carney, and Yeats played just one of their teams' playoff games.
25TH WIN FOR 19TH TIME: The win over Providence on Saturday night (March 9th) improved the Terriers' overall record to 25-8-3
It marks the 19th time since the 1964-65 season that the Terriers have won 25 or more games
The school single-season record for wins is 34 set by the 1993-94 season. The second highest win total is 31 first set in 1994-95 and tied the following year. The 1977-78 team won 30 games, while the 1992-93 team had 29 wins. Three teams won 28 games-1990-91, 1983-84, and 1970-71. The 1965-66 team won 27 games. Three teams won 26 games-1996-97, 1974-75, and 1971-72. Finally, seven teams have won 25 games, including this year's club. The others were 1999-2000, 1989-90, 1985-86, 1975-76, 1966-67, and 1964-65.
15th TIME FOR PARKER: For Terrier veteran coach Jack Parker, this was the 15th time in his 29-year career that his team has won 25 or more games.
0-2-0; 5-3-0 VS BLACK BEARS IN HOCKEY EAST TOURNAMENT: Tonight's game marks the third time the Terriers and Black Bears will be meeting in the semifinals of the league tournament, and the Black Bears won the previous two matchups
Overall, the Terriers are 5-3-0 vs Maine in the Hockey East tournament
Below is a recap of the previous meetings between these two teams in the tournament.
March 17 at The FleetCenter: Maine, 4; TERRIERS, 2: Four different Black Bears scored goals and Matt Yeats turned aside 36 Terrier shots as Maine advanced to the tournament title game. Robert Ek and Chris Heisten put the Black Bears ahead, 2-0, by the 5:40 mark of the first period. Carl Corazzini scored the first of his two B.U. goals as the Terriers trailed, 2-1, at the first intermission. Maine increased its lead to 4-1 before the second period was over behind goals by Ben Guite and Niko Dimitrakos. Corazzini scored late in the game for B.U., but it was too little, too late. Rick DiPietro was charged with the loss as he had 25 saves. Maine went on to defeat Boston College, 2-1, in the title game.
March 11 at TERRIERS, 8; Maine, 5: Bob Lachance scored his second collegiate hat trick, and Mike Pomichter added 3 assists to spearhead the Terrier offense. In the meantime, B.U. goalie Derek Herlofsky had a career-high 39 saves en route to win
B.U. had what appeared to be an insurmountable 7-2 lead at 5:53 of the third period before the Black Bears came back with 3 unanswered goals-one each by Peter Ferraro, Mike Latendresse, and Cal Ingraham to cut the deficit to 7-5. However, they came no further with Pomichter scoring into an empty net with just 13 seconds to play to provide the final margin. Blair Allison was charged with the loss, as he had 19 saves. Blair Marsh played the final 15:35 and had 4 saves
Of the 13 goals, 9 came on the power play. B.U. was 4-of-7, and Maine was 5-of-8.
March 12 at Terriers: 4, Maine, 3: J.P. McKersie had 30 saves and Jon Jenkins scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 2:15 of the third period as the Terriers moved on to the Hockey East semifinals. Each team scored first- and third-period goals, but B.U. won the game with a pair of second-period goals. B.U.'s goal scorers were Shawn Bates, Kevin O'Sullivan, and Jay Pandolfo along with Jenkins. Maine countered with a pair of goals by Cal Ingraham and one by Peter Ferraro. Blair Marsh started in the Maine net and had 14 saves in 2 periods. Blair Allison played the final period, had 8 saves, and was charged with the loss. As was true the night before, each team showed strength on the power play as B.U. was 2-of-6 and Maine was 3-of-5.
March 20 at Boston Garden: Maine, 5; TERRIERS, 2: It was billed as a dream matchup between the top-seeded Black Bears and second-seeded Terriers. For the first 25:42 of the game, that's the way it was played as tourney MVP Jim Montgomery had scored for Maine, while Rich Brennan had tied the game for the Terriers. Maine then scored 4 unanswered goals en route to the win. The attack was led by Mike Latendresse, who had two goals, and Montgomery and Chris Imes, who had scored a goal apiece. Jay Pandolfo accounted for the Terriers' other goal. Scott Cashman had 24 saves in the Terrier net, and Garth Snow had 28 stops for Maine. Brennan and David Sacco were the two B.U. players on the All-Tournament Team.
March 10 at Boston Garden: TERRIERS, 4; Maine, 3, overtime: In one of the great championship games played in tournament history, Shawn McEachern scored the game-winning goal at 2:19 of overtime to lift the Terriers to the win. McEachern, who centered the line that included Keith Tkachuk on the left and Tony Amonte on the right, was named the tournament's MVP
B.U. led 1-0 at the end of the first period on a goal by Ed Ronan. Maine took a 2-1 lead on a second-period goal by Jean-Yves Roy and a third-period goal by Dave LaCouture. B.U. came back to third-period goals by Amonte and Peter Ahola to lead 3-2 with just 2:15 to play in regulation. Keith Carney then tied the game for Maine with just 1:52 to play. That set the stage for McEachern's game-winner
John Bradley, who joined McEachern and Ahola on the All-Tournament Team, had 24 saves to earn the win, while Garth Snow had 28 saves in the Black Bear net.
March 9: at Maine, 3; TERRIERS 1: Martin Robitaille scored a pair of goals, while Matt Delguidice turned aside 32-of-33 Terrier shots en route to the win. Delguidice was busiest in the first and third periods with 12 saves each
B.U. freshman goalie Scott Cashman, who had been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year, had 19 saves in the losing effort. A second Terrier freshman, Tony Amonte, who had joined Cashman and Peter Ahola as the three B.U. players on the All-Freshman team, accounted for B.U.'s lone goal
It was Maine's seventh straight win over the Terriers.
March 9: at TERRIERS, 7; Maine, 4: Ed Lowney had a pair of goals and assist to lead the Terrier attack. Mike McHugh was Maine's offensive standout with a pair of goals. Terry Taillefer earned the win for the Terriers with 27 stops, while Jean Lacoste had 37 saves in the losing effort
It marked a milestone win for Terrier coach Jack Parker, as it was the 250th of his career. In 11-plus years, his record was now 250-111-13.
March 10: at TERRIERS, 4; Maine, 2: Trailing 2-0 at 13:04 of the first period, the Terriers scored 4 unanswered goals en route to the win. The Terrier goal scorers were Chris Matchett, Ed Lowney, Paul Gerlitz, and Clark Donatelli. Maine's goal scorers were Ron Hellen and Mike McHugh. Once again, the goalies of record were Terry Taillefer (21 saves) and Jean Lacoste (31 saves)
It was the Terriers' 10th straight win over Maine, and their 5th this season.
OVERALL SERIES VS. THE BLACK BEARS: Tonight marks the 79th time since the 1923-24 season that these two teams have played, and B.U. holds a slight edge, 37-34 with 7 ties
The first game in the rivalry was played on February 2, 1924, and the Black Bears skated to a 4-2 win. The two teams did not play again until the 1979-80 season. Since then, they have played against each other every year. The Terriers dominated the series through the mid-eighties, as they were 15-4 during the first 19 meetings. The Black Bears then enjoyed success from 1985-91 winning 15-of-18 as the overall series record then read 19-18-0 in favor of Maine through the first 37 matchups. Since then, the series has remained even as the Terriers are 19-15 with 7 ties in the last 41 games.
37-34-7; THREE WINS BY FORFEIT: The Terriers' overall record vs. Maine is 37-34-7
Three of the wins have been by forfeit. On November 16, 1991, Maine skated to an 8-1 win at Brown Arena, but the Black Bears had to forfeit that game because they had an ineligible player
Two years later, during the 1993-94 season, Maine had to forfeit two more games to B.U. The Black Bears had a 5-1 win at Alfond Arena on November 20, 1993 and a 0-0 overtime tie at Brown Arena on December 19, 1993 that they had to forfeit to the Terriers.
1-1-1 THIS YEAR: This will be the fourth time this year these two teams have played, and the record is deadlocked with one win each and a tie. Below is the scoring recap from the three games.

A RETURN TO THE FLEETCENTER: After being eliminated by Providence in the quarterfinals of last year's tournament, the Terriers return to the FleetCenter for the Hockey East finals. Actually, this is just the second time in the last 5 years that the Terriers have advanced to the tournament finals. In 1998 and 1999, they lost in the quarterfinals first to Merrimack and then to Providence. In 2000, they swept UMass/Amherst in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals where they lost to Maine, 4-2.
WILL BE SHOOTING FOR SIXTH LAMORIELLO CUP: B.U. will be shooting for its record sixth Lamoriello Cup, symbolic of the Hockey East Tournament title. They won it in 1986, 1991, 1994, 1995, and 1997. Boston College is the only other team to win the Cup 5 times, as the Eagles skated off with it in 1987, 1990, 1998, 1999, and last year. Maine (1989, 1992, 1993, 2000) has each won it 4 times, Providence (1985 and 1996) has won it twice, and Northeastern (1988) has won it once.
