Van der Gulik Named National Offensive Player Of The Week

David Van der Gulik (Abbotsford, BC) has been named the U.S. College Hockey Online/ITECH National Offensive Player of the Week as a result of his performance in the Terriers' tie and overtime win against the University of New Hampshire last week.

In the series opener, which ended in a 3-3 overtime tie on Thursday, March 4th, Van der Gulik scored a pair of goals, including the tying one at 14:20 of the third period. Earlier in the game, he scored at 18:14 of the first period to cut the Wildcats' lead in half to 2-1.

However, his real heroics came two days later, on March 6th, when he scored at 2:30 of overtime to provide the winning margin in the Terriers' 4-3 victory. The win enabled the Terriers to wrap up the final playoff spot in the Hockey East Tournament, which begins Thursday night (March 11th) with the Terriers traveling to Boston College. B.U., which posted a 6-15-3 Hockey East record, will take an overall mark of 10-15-9 into the tournament.

For Van der Gulik, who was also named the Hockey East/CCM Player of the Week for his three-goal effort against the Wildcats, his goal total gave him a team-leading 12 for the season. He also has six assists for 18 total points, which ties him for third on the team.

This is the second time in three weeks that a Terrier has been named the USCHO/ITECH National Offensive Player of the Week. On February 25th, junior Brian McConnell (Norfolk, MA) was similarly honored for his play in the weekend series against Massachusetts. In the 6-1 win on February 20th, he scored his first collegiate hat trick. Then, the next night, he had an assist in the 2-2 overtime tie.
