Carr Explodes For Career-High 31 As Terriers Down UWGB In OT

GREEN BAY, WI - Freshman guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, CT) scored 11 of his game- and career-high 31 points in the extra session, pacing the Boston University men's basketball team to a 79-75 overtime win over host Wisconsin-Green Bay in the first round of the Oneida Bingo and Casino Classic on Friday night (Dec. 28).

Down 59-55 with two seconds remaining in regulation, senior forward Stijn Dhondt (Bornem, Belgium) made his first three-pointer of the season to cut the Phoenix lead to one point with 1.9 seconds left. Junior forward Billy Collins (Concord, NH) then fouled UWGB's Calix N'diaye before the Phoenix could inbounds the ball. N'Diaye made both ends of the two-shot foul, giving the home team a 61-58 lead.

B. U. caught a break when a length-of-the-court pass was tipped out of bounds by UWGB (2-8), setting up an inbounds for the Terriers along their half of the court with just 1.1 seconds left. Collins passed the ball to sophomore forward Ryan Butt (Lancaster, PA), who took a shot from midway between the top of the key and halfcourt, a shot which found the bottom of the net to send the Terriers' bench into a frenzy and the game into overtime. Butt had his strongest game of the season, finishing with a season-high 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Carr was the story of the game, though. He took over in the overtime, scoring the Terriers' first seven points to give B. U. a 69-62 lead with 2:48 left in the extra session. Collins extended the lead to 10 points at 72-62 with a layup with 1:38 left.

The Terriers, who shot a dismal 2-of-8 from the free throw line in regulation, went 9-for-13 in the overtime, holding off a UWGB rally that saw it make three three-pointers in the final 26 seconds. Carr made all four of his free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the victory.

"I couldn't be any prouder of our kids," Terrier head coach Dennis Wolff said. "We were playing in a tough environment, and we had guy after guys making big plays for us."

"Carr was terrific," Wolff continued. "He allowed us to hang in the game. Every game he's getting better than before."

Carr finished 12-of-20 from the field, and 3-of-7 from behind the free throw line in a career-high 41 minutes of action. Collins finished the game with 13 points and nine rebounds.

UWGB was led by Matt Rohde's 20 points. He made 4-of-6 three-pointers. The first-round loss was UWGB's first in the nine-year history of the tournament. It came into the game with a 9-0 first-round record, and its two losses were in the title game.

The Terriers shot 50 percent-or-better from the field for the third time this season. They shot 50.8 percent from the field, making 31-of-61 shots in the game. In the overtime, B. U. made all four of its field goals.

Boston University (6-5) advances to face California-Irvine, a 79-62 winner over Lipscomb in the other first-round game. The championship game of the tournament will be played Saturday, Dec. 29, starting at 8:30 p.m. EST.
