Terriers Improve Road Record To 5-0 With 55-53 Win Over Bearcats



Binghamton, NY - Sophomore guard Kevin Fitzgerald (Belle Harbor, NY) scored a career-high 12 points and the Boston University men's basketball team held Binghamton to just 31.6 percent shooting, as the Terriers improved to 5-0 in conference road games with a 55-53 victory at Binghamton's West Gym on Saturday (Jan. 26) afternoon.

In the opening minutes of the game, freshman guard Chaz Carr (Manchester, CT) hit two jumpers and a layup as the Terriers sped out to a 10-0 lead with 4:54 elapsed.

The Terriers took a 22-10 lead on a Fitzgerald three-pointer with 9:17 left, but Binghamton (7-12, 4-5) went on a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 24-22 with under two minutes to go. The Terriers led, 27-24, at the intermission, and held the Bearcats to 29.6 percent shooting in the period.

The visiting Terriers held three seven-point leads in the first four minutes of the second half. Binghamton, however, climbed back into the game as Anthony Green connected on a three-pointer and a jumper on consecutive possessions to give the Bearcats their first lead of the game at 43-42 with 8:08 left in regulation.

After a pair of Fitzgerald layups, one on a fastbreak pass from Carr, which allowed the Terriers to regain the lead at 47-45, sophomore forward Ryan Butt (Lancaster, PA) hit a clutch three-pointer from the right baseline with 4:08 remaining to push the Terrier advantage to five points at 50-45.


 

 

Big baskets by senior forward Stijn Dhondt (Bornem, Belgium) and freshman forward Rashad Bell (Queens, NY) in the final minutes capped the Terrier victory, their seventh in eight conference games. B. U. has held each of its conference opponents to under 40 percent shooting.

Fitzgerald made five of his six shots in the game, the five field goals made tying his career-high. Junior forward Billy Collins (Concord, NH) contributed with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Butt also finished with nine points and grabbed six rebounds. Carr went 4-for-8 from the field for eight points. Bell had seven points and a career-high nine rebounds. Binghamton was led by Jeffrey St. Fort's 11 points and eight rebounds.

Boston University (13-7, 7-1) is back home on Tuesday, Jan. 29, for a game with Hartford at Case Gym. Game time is 7 p.m.
