Northwestern Head Coach Kate Drohan
On the game...
"I thought it was a very well-played ball game. I thought both teams pitched exceptionally well. I really liked the feel of the game when we started. I thought we looked very comfortable and very aggressive. It was a great sign for us that our freshman got the offense started. I really liked the way we pitched down the stretch. Even when it got a little hot out on the field we did an excellent job being efficient."
On her strategy against Kaitlin Cochran...
"We didn't want Cochran to beat us today. I thought Eileen (Canney) responded beautifully and really stepped up."
Northwestern senior pitcher Eileen Canney
On the game...
"I think it was a lot of fun out there. The defense behind me made it extremely easy to pitch to some of those hitters, because they are a great hitting team. I think in difficult situations you just have to relax and go back to the things you practice, and the defense made it easier to relax."
On Kaitlin Cochran...
"She is one of the best hitters in the game right now and it is very difficult to get her out. I was just trying to be smart and not take any chances."
On playing Washington on Friday...
"We just take it one game at a time. Today we were focused on Arizona State. Tonight, tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon we will focus on Washington."
Northwestern freshman leftfielder Kelly Dyer
On going 2-for-2 against the Sun Devils today and hitting well against them earlier in the year...
"I think I just get comfortable in the box. Today, Eileen (Canney) was pitching great and I just wanted to put the ball in play."
Northwestern senior centerfielder Katie Logan
On the pitch she hit for her RBI double...
"I wasn't really looking for that pitch. I was just trying to put the ball on the ground and move the runner and get myself on base. The ball goes wherever it goes, it just happened to be pretty clutch and we scored off it. But I wasn't expecting that pitch."
Northwestern sophomore shortstop Tammy Williams
On the purple cow and its purpose...
"The purple cow is us. We love purple. You have to rock it if that's your school colors, so we love it. The purple cow is basically something that is amazing, that you don't see every day. That is what our team is about, being extraordinary. We want to leave an impact on people, and hopefully they will wear purple the next game."
On playing Washington on Friday...
"Our coaches do a good job of filling us in and letting us know what we should expect, so we are going to be ready for tomorrow."
ARIZONA STATE HEAD COACH CLINT MYERS
On what caused his team to lose...
"Pitching is the name of the game. She (Eileen Canney) pitched an outstanding game. We couldn't stay off the rise ball. As long as we kept swinging she kept throwing it, and I take my hat off to her. She did an outstanding job."
On his team needing to regroup...
"We were in this exact same spot last year. We opened up with Texas and Cat (Osterman) really stuck it (to us). We came out and beat a really good Oregon State team and we played Tennessee where if we make one play we are playing instead of Tennessee. It is a character builder. We have five seniors and we talked about what they want to remember. They are all an intricate part of our team. This is the time where the best rise to the top, and that is what we have to do. It is time to stop talking about it and start doing it."
ARIZONA STATE JUNIOR PITCHER KATIE BURKHART
On her pitching performance...
"There were probably a couple of hits that were mistake pitches here and there. It wasn't my best day. The solo home run was not a mistake by me. It was down and she came through and got it. Hats off to her for that one."
ARIZONA STATE SOPHOMORE OUTFIELDER KAITLIN COCHRAN
On what caused her to struggle at the plate...
"It was hard for us to lay off the rise ball. I think it was just one of those days where things were just not clicking. I think we will be able to come out Saturday against DePaul and take it to them."
