Sport Summary - Golf

Indiana and Ohio State have captured a combined 18 of the 25 Big Ten Women's Golf team championships and have 17 individual medalist titles between the two, including the first six.  The Buckeyes have earned a conference-best 11 championships, while Indiana leads with nine individual titles, both of which are byproducts of the teachings of the two schools' coaches.  Sam Carmichael, the legendary and former head coach at Indiana, was named Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times, while current OSU mentor Therese Hession has been honored on six occasions.  Hession, who led the Buckeyes to four consecutive Big Ten championships from 2002-05, has coached four OSU golfers to five conference Player of the Year selections, while Carmichael helped four to seven top league honors.

Indiana's Erika Wicoff, the league's Freshman of the Year in 1993, earned Player of the Year accolades in 1994, 1995 and 1996, after winning the Big Ten's individual title in each of those years.  She is the only Big Ten women's golfer to have ever won the conference championship three times.

Ohio State's Kristen White is one of six golfers and four Buckeyes to win the conference championship twice, as she took home the crown in 2003 and 2005.  Cathy Kratzert (1982-83) and Cheryl Stacy (1984-85) of Ohio State earned the first four medalist titles in Big Ten history and join fellow Buckeye Mollie Fankhauser (2001-02), along with Illinois' Renee Heiken (1991-93), Indiana's Erin Carney (1998-99) and Minnesota's Kate Hughes (1988-89) on the list of two-time winners.  White, who was tabbed the 2002 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is also one of eight league standouts to have earned All-Conference honors in each of her four years.  Current LPGA star Michele Redman of Indiana was the first to do so from 1984-87, and was followed by fellow Hoosier Jenny Gray from 1995-98.  White earned first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2002-05 and joined Illinois' Becky Biehl (1992-95), Michigan State's Kasey Gant (1998-2001) and Emily Bastel (1999-2002), Minnesota's Sara Evens (1990-93) and Purdue's Kari Damron (2000-03) in the illustrious group.

Michigan State, which won the inaugural Big Ten championship in 1982, joins Purdue, which won the 25th overall conference title in 2006, as two-time team champions.  Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin have each won the event once.  In NCAA Championship success, the Big Ten has posted a pair of top-five marks over the years with Ohio State placing fourth in 2003 and Indiana finishing fifth in 1995.
