Purdue Claims Lead at Men's Golf Championships

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Purdue improved 15 strokes from its Round 1 performance to take the lead after the second round of the 2007 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships at the Scarlet Golf Course on the Ohio State University campus. Overcoming cold and blustery conditions, the Boilermakers shot an 8-over-par 292 in the afternoon to finish the day 23-over (299-292 - 591). Michigan State (298-295 - 593) held strong in second place, shooting 11-over in Round 2 to finish two strokes back of the leaders at 25-over for the day. After ending Round 1 in 10th place with a 23-over 307, Minnesota vaulted into third in the team standings with a 9-over 293 in the afternoon round for a combined team total of 32-over 600 through 36 holes. Wisconsin also made a big jump, moving from ninth into a tie for fourth with Northwestern and Ohio State, shooting an 11-over 295 in Round 2 to finish the day at 33-over 601. The Wildcats (298-303 - 601) shot 19-over in the second round to tie with the Badgers and Buckeyes. The team leader after Round 1, Ohio State (295-306 - 601) dropped into a tie for fourth after shooting 22-over in the afternoon. Rounding out the field, Indiana currently sits in seventh (299-303 - 602) while Illinois (302-305 - 607) and Penn State (301-306 - 607) are tied for eighth. Michigan (298-312 - 610) drops to 10th, and Iowa (315-312 - 627) remains in 11th. The individual leader with a 2-under 69 after Round 1, Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul shot a 1-over 72 in the second round to finish the day at 1-under 141 to remain atop the individual scoreboard. Matt Harmon of Michigan State hit birdies on two of his final five holes to finish at even par in Round 2, setting his total for the day at 2-over 144 to tie with Ohio State's David Vallina for second. Vallina shot a 3-over 74 in Round 2 after his 1-under 70 in Round 1 for a 36-hole total of 144. Penn State's Robert Rohanna was the only individual to post a sub-par performance in the second round with a 1-under 70. With a 4-over 75 in the morning, the junior moved from a tie for 16th to a tie for fourth in the team standings (75-70 - 145). Michigan State's Ryan Brehm is tied with Rohanna after going 2-over in Round 2 (72-73 - 145). Round 3 is set to tee off at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
