BGSU's Papageorgiou Named To Academic Team

Nov. 24, 1999

Bowling Green State University junior JoAnna Papageorgiou was named to the GTE Academic All-District IV Team, it was announced today. "Pop" was named to the district's third team.

The GTE Academic All-District IV Team is made up of student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools in the states of Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or an important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.

Papageorgiou started BG's first 12 matches of the year before missing five contests due to injury. She returned to the starting lineup for the team's last three contests of the season, including both of BGSU's Mid-American Conference Tournament matches. "Pop" averaged 2.25 kills and 0.90 blocks on the year. Off the court, she entered the fall semester with a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA in chemistry.

The Falcons completed the 1999 season with a 21-12 record, and BGSU was 12-6 in MAC play. BG advanced to the MAC Tournament Semifinals before losing to eventual tourney champion Ball State.
