Willems Posts Regional Qualifying Hammer Throw

May 15, 2003

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Two Bowling Green State University throwers got the Falcons on the board in the first day of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday (May 15). The conference meet is being held at Lyle Bennett Track on the Central Michigan University campus.

After the first day (two completed events), the Falcons currently hold sixth place with a total of five points.

All five of those points came in the hammer throw, where a pair of Falcons posted season-best results. Senior Mary Willems finished sixth in the event, with a throw of 54.00m (177 feet, 2 inches) that met the Regional Qualifying standard. That distance was a BGSU season best in the event.

Junior Kerri McClung was right behind Willems, with a throw of 49.01m (160-9) to place seventh in the event. McClung's effort also was a season best.

Sophomore Elise Gould finished 13th in the 10,000 meters, with a time of 39:19.18. The hammer throw and the 10,000m were the only two events completed on Thursday.

Friday's (May 16) action begins at 10:30 a.m. at Bennett Track. For up-to-the-minute information on the MAC Championships, go to the BGSU track and field home page, and click on the MAC Championships icon at the right of the page. Or, simply click here.
