BGSU Beats Toledo, 5-2, on Senior Day

April 9, 2005

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - On 'Senior Day' at Keefe Courts, the Bowling Green State University tennis team completed the home portion of the season in style, picking up a 5-2 win over the University of Toledo Saturday afternoon (April 9).

With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-6 in dual-match play, and the Falcons have topped the victory total for all of last season. BGSU went 10-14 a year ago.

The Falcons have also matched last year's MAC win total, improving to 3-2. Last year's team went 3-6 in league action.

The Rockets drop to 8-10 overall and 1-5 in league play this season.

The Brown and Orange swept all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point, with one of the seniors -- Susie Schoenberger -- a part of the victory at the number-one flight. Schoenberger teamed with sophomore Ashley Jakupcin for the victory, downing UT's Myriam Cueva and Viviana Rivero, 8-6.

Another senior, Cameron Benjamin, and junior Heidi Romer posted a win by the identical 8-6 score, at the third doubles flight. Junior Andrea Meister and freshman Andrea Volle won by an 8-3 decision at the middle doubles match.

BGSU captured four of the six singles matches to take the victory. Jakupcin downed Rivero in straight sets at the second flight, while Volle lost only two total games in her sweep of Daniella Moran at the third flight.

Benjamin lost just four games in her sixth-flight victory over Sarah Thompson, while UT's Sarah Horning was able to win only five games in her fourth-flight loss to Romer.

UT's only points came at the first and fifth flights. At the top flight, Cueva defeated Schoenberger, while Sarah VanderMolen eked out a win over Meister, winning a 10-8 tiebreaker after the competitors had split their first two sets.

As mentioned, Saturday marked 'Senior Day' at Keefe Courts, with Benjamin, Schoenberger and Laura Kokinda recognized in ceremonies prior to the match.

The Falcons now hit the road for four MAC matches to close the regular season. BGSU will take on Western Michigan Friday (April 15) and Northern Illinois Saturday (April 16), before playing at Miami (April 22) and Marshall (April 23) the following weekend. The MAC Championships will be hosted by UT in the Glass City from April 28 through May 1.
