Highlanders Narrowly Defeat Falcons, 4-3

March 15, 2002

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team suffered a narrow defeat on the road against the University of California Riverside Friday (March 15), as the host Highlanders recorded a 4-3 victory. The dual match was held at the UC Riverside Sports Complex.

Host UCR improves to 5-10 in dual-match play this season, while the Falcons drop to 1-11.

BGSU captured the doubles point to open the match, with the top-flight team of senior Devon Bissinger and freshman Susan Schoenberger posting a convincing 8-2 win over their UCR foes. The team of junior Alyson Gabel and sophomore Jessica Johnson was victorious at the third level.

In singles play, however, the host Highlanders won four matches, including three which went to three sets. BGSU received wins from Schoenberger at the third flight and Coello at the fifth level. Schoenberger battled to a three-set victory, while Coello lost just three games in her straight-sets win over Miranda Lagac. Coello, now 6-3 in dual-match singles play this year, has won four consecutive matches.

Maloney (flight #1), Bissinger (#2) and freshman Laura Kokinda (#6) all lost their singles matches in three sets, with Kokinda falling in a third-set tiebreaker. BGSU's other singles competitor was Gabel at the fourth flight.

The Falcons continue a 10-match road swing with the Mid-American Conference opener on Friday, March 22, at Ball State. BGSU's next home match is April 5 vs. arch-rival Toledo.
