Amy Smith Named to Academic All-District IV First Team
May 27, 2004 Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University's Amy Smith has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America Women's At-Large District IV First-Team, as voted on by Sports Information Directors from the states of Ohio, Michigan, Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district. The CoSIDA Academic All-District Team is a part of the CoSIDA Academic All-America program. First team selections will appear on the national ballot for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's At-Large team to be announced June 15.
Smith is a social work major with a 4.00 grade-point-average. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies, and has also been involved with Active Christians Today, Student Christian Athletes, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and, this spring, the Genesis Program at the Juvenile Justice Department of Sandusky County. Smith was one of just four BGSU students to earn the Frazier Reams Public Affairs Undergraduate Fellowship this past spring. She was also named to the 2003 MAC All-Academic First Team and 2004 MAC All-Academic Honorable Mention.
She finished ninth at this year's Mid-American Conference Championships in the 100 butterfly in a time of 57.93. That time is the 10th best all-time in BGSU history. Smith was also a member of the 200 free relay that finished fifth at the MAC Championships. She placed 17th in the 100 butterfly at the 2003 MAC Championships. Smith will serve as one of three senior co-captains for the 2004-05 BGSU squad.
