Hayley Wiemer Named MAC Freshman of the Year

May 9, 2006

MIDLAND, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University standout Hayley Wiemer has been named the 2006 Mid-American Conference Softball Freshman of the Year. The announcement was named at Tuesday evening's (May 9) banquet, held in conjunction with the league tournament. Desiree Miller joined Wiemer on the MAC's All-Freshman Team.

Wiemer is the third Falcon to earn league freshman-of-the-year honors, and the first in over a decade. Tricia Askins earned the honor in 1992, while Jennifer Wolf was named the MAC Freshman of the Year in 1993.

Wiemer, a native of Sylvania, Ohio (St. Ursula Acad.), was named to the all-league first team Tuesday evening. She has hit .316 this season, good for second on the team, and is also second on the Falcons with a 1.66 earned-run average in the circle. Wiemer has an on-base percentage of .411 on the year, and has drawn more walks (a BG-high 22) at the plate than she has issued (17 in 147 2/3 innings). She has a 10-10 record in the circle, and a .989 fielding percentage. In MAC action, Wiemer had a batting average of .373, also second on the team, and was 6-3 with a 2.36 ERA.

Miller, a native of Hartville, Ohio (Marlington H.S.), was named to the All-MAC Second Team at Tuesday night's banquet. Primarily a designated player this season, she enters the league tournament with a .271 batting average, three homers and 23 RBI. In MAC action, Miller hit .295 with a slugging percentage of .410.

The other specialty awards were announced Tuesday night as well. Eastern Michigan's Lauren Clark was named the MAC Player of the Year, while Kent State's Brittney Robinson was chosen as the MAC's Pitcher of the Year. Kathy Lietke of Western Michigan is the 2006 MAC Coach of the Year.

The Falcons of head coach Leigh Ross have an overall record of 35-21, and BGSU finished MAC play with a 16-6 record, good for a second-place finish in the East Division and the third seed for the MAC Tournament. BGSU will face sixth-seeded Akron at Currie Stadium Wednesday morning (May 10). The game, the opening contest in the eight-team, double-elimination tourney, is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
