BGSU To Face Buffalo In MAC Tourney Opener

Nov. 1, 2002

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team has learned the identity of its opponent for the opening round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Falcons will host the University at Buffalo in Tuesday's (Nov. 5) league tourney quarterfinal round. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.

Tickets for the match, which can be purchased at Cochrane Field on the day of the match, are $5.00 for all fans, with the exception of students of the two participating institutions. BGSU and UB students who show a valid student ID will be admitted for $2.00.

In MAC action Friday (Nov. 1), Ohio defeated Marshall by a 2-0 count, vaulting the Bobcats past the Falcons into third place in the final league standings. Bowling Green, picked to finish ninth in the MAC's Preseason Coaches Poll, ends the regular season in fourth place. The Falcons, 11-7-2 overall after Friday night's 3-1 win at Wright State, finished with a MAC record of 7-4-1 and a total of 22 points. Ohio's Friday win gave the Bobcats a 7-3-2 record and 23 points.

Buffalo tied Eastern Michigan for fifth place in the MAC standings, as each team went 5-5-2 against conference foes. But, UB gains the fifth seed by virtue of a 2-1, double-overtime win over the Eagles in the teams' regular-season meeting in Buffalo (Sept. 22).

The Falcons posted a 2-1 OT win in Buffalo in the teams' earlier 2002 matchup. Freshman Samantha Meister scored the overtime winner, and classmate Britt Anderson also had a goal in that contest.

The four winners of Tuesday's tourney quarterfinal matches will advance to the site of the highest remaining seeds for semifinal action Friday (Nov. 8), with the championship match scheduled for two days later (Nov. 10) at the same site. For example, if #1-seeded Miami wins in the quarterfinal round, the semifinals and championship would be held in Oxford, Ohio.

The Falcons lead Buffalo, 3-2-1, in the all-time series between the teams. The teams have each won two of the four matches held at Cochrane Field.
