Samantha Meister Named MAC Player Of The Week

Oct. 13, 2003

CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Bowling Green State University sophomore Samantha Meister has been named the Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Oct. 13). Meister earns the honor for the first time in her Falcon career.

Meister is the second Falcon women's soccer player in as many weeks to earn league player-of-the-week honors. Junior Kristy Coppes earned the honor last Monday (Oct. 6).

Meister, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, scored a school-record four goals as the Falcons rallied from a two-goal deficit with less than 22 minutes left for a 4-3 overtime win at Northern Illinois Sunday (Oct. 12). Meister scored her second goal of the match with 21:53 remaining in the second half, then scored the tying goal with just 6:18 left. In overtime, just as she had on the tying goal, Meister headed home a Julie Trundle corner kick, giving BGSU the win with 9:14 gone in the extra session.

Meister's total of four goals not only set a school single-match record, but also set a MAC record for goals in a league match (since the inception of MAC women's soccer in 1997, three other players have scored four goals in a match, but all did so in non-conference contests). She also set a school record for points in a match, with eight.

Meister has scored a total of 13 goals in 22 matches over the last calendar year (plus one day). She has been at her best in MAC play, with 11 goals in her last 13 conference regular-season contests. Meister is now tied for the team lead in goals (seven) and points (15) this fall, with all seven of her goals having come in BG's eight conference matches.

The Falcons (6-7-1, 4-3-1 MAC) of head coach Andy Richards briefly step outside MAC play for a Wednesday (Oct. 15) match at Michigan State, before returning home for a pair of conference contests this weekend. BGSU will host Buffalo in Friday (Oct. 17) action, beginning at 4:00 p.m., before entertaining league-leading Kent State for a 2:30 p.m. match Sunday (Oct. 19) at Cochrane Field.
