Burke Badenhop Selected in 19th Round of MLB Amateur Draft by Detroit
June 8, 2005 Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University student-athlete Burke Badenhop (Perrysburg, Ohio) was selected in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur draft on Wednesday, June 8, by the Detroit Tigers. Badenhop was taken as the 570th overall pick of the 2005 draft, marking the first time since 1998 that two Falcons have been selected in the same draft. Junior Nolan Reimold was tabbed as the 61st overall pick (second round) yesterday by the Baltimore Orioles. In 1998, Jeff Hundley was picked in the seventh round by Anaheim while Andy Butler was selected in the 23rd round by Minnesota. Since 1965 when the MLB Amateur Draft began, BGSU has now had 37 players drafted. Badenhop becomes the sixth BGSU player to be drafted by Detroit and the third in the past four years. "I'm really excited," said Badenhop. "Having to wait until the second day was kind of a grind but it was nice to go early in the day. "They've been with me since the start of the year. I had a chance to go to Comerica recently and developed a good relationship with the scout from this area. I'm looking forward to being a Tiger and working in their system." The 6-5, 200-pound right-hander completed his collegiate career this past season for the Falcons, finishing with a MAC-high and career-high nine victories (9-2), the most by a Falcon since 1999. He also tied for the team-lead with 11 starts. His 3.73 ERA was a career-low and third-best on the Falcon squad, while his 56 strikeouts, 72.1 IPP, and two complete games were also career-bests for Badehop. He was named MAC Pitcher of the Week and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on April 11 after pitching his first career, complete-game shutout vs. Buffalo on April 10 (1-0 win). Badenhop ended his career fourth all-time at BGSU in appearances (70) and victories (17), while he was sixth in career innings pitched (234.2) and eighth in career strikeouts (177).
Badenhop was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team last week and was named BGSU's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in April. He received his diploma on May 7 with a degree in economics and a 3.94 GPA. BGSU's Professional Signees (Signing date and organization listed below) |
