BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University cross country teams hosted their lone home action of the 2002 season, the 16th Annual Mel Brodt Invitational, Saturday morning (Sept. 14). On the men's side, the Falcons got a third-place finish from senior Mario Rothmund, and BGSU placed ninth as a team. The Falcon women, led by senior Briana Killian, finished in fourth place.

The meet featured 12 men's teams and 11 women's squads from around the Midwest. Cincinnati captured the team title in the men's race, outdistancing Oakland by 22 points. Eastern Michigan finished third.

Michigan won the women's race by just a two-point margin over Western Michigan, with Dayton third and the Falcons fourth. Toledo's Abraham Habte won the men's race, while Becki Wells, an unattached runner, won the women's race by 31 seconds. Wells is the sister of BGSU cross country coach Cami Wells. U-M's Lindsey Gallo was second in the women's race.

Rothmund finished the men's eight-kilometer race in a time of 25:21, trailing Habte by nine seconds and EMU's Ryan Desgrange by six ticks of the clock. Sophomore Patrick Maynard was BGSU's second finisher, placing 44th in the 118-runner race in a time of

Other BGSU competitors included Troy Stiles (64th, 28:05), Steve Blasko (66th, 28:14), Kris Lachowski (68th, 28:18), Phil King (74th, 28:28), Josh Stucky (76th, 28:36) and Ed Stonestreet (96th, 29:26).

Killian paced the Falcon women with her eighth-place finish in the 149-runner race, with a time of 18:57. Amber Culp finished 12th in a time of 19:05, while Nicole Suitor was 33rd with a 19:50 time.

Other Falcon finishers included Sarah Lohrbach (38th, 19:59), Cyndi Bostdorff (40th, 20:07), Katrina Kerns (48th, 20:22), Kristin Spicer (49th, 20:24), Leslie Carden (51st, 20:25), Elise Gould (57th, 20:31), Melissa Krueger (58th, 20:31), Leighann Kramer (62nd, 20:36), Emily Jackson (69th, 20:43), Christy Paine (92nd, 21:24) and Beth Scheall (124th, 22:39).

The Falcons are idle next weekend before heading to Ypsilanti, Mich. for the Sept. 27 Central Collegiate Championships.
