Landover, Md. - The annual Terrapin Invitational in Landover, Md. provided the Bethune-Cookman College track & field squad a chance to showcase their improvements, and that is what they did as they had another positive showing inside the Prince George's Learning & Sports Complex. Teanne Sergeant held down the 200 Meter Dash for the women's side of things on the track as she collected the highest overall finish (20th) with a time of 26.79 seconds. Sergeant's time was the best overall performance in her heat. Melissa Scott picked up a time of 27.14 seconds in her efforts for the same event. In the 400 Meter Dash, Tenisha Bryan completed the event with a time of 1:02.43 and a 24th place finish overall. Fellow Wildcats in the form of Tiffany Gordon and Danielle Ephraim came in 29th and 30th, respectively. Gordon finished with a time of 1:02.83, while Epharim came across with a finishing mark of 1:03.11. Freshman jump specialist Britney Gibson went to work in her area of expertise as she collected a 6th place finish in the triple jump with a leap pf 10.92m (35-10.00) in her best effort. Gibson also finished 10th in the long jump as she collected a mark of 5.16m (16-11.25). "The women are really coming around nicely, and I was more impressed by the relay team than any other," stated B-CC first year head coach Garfield Ellenwood. "I am happy to see everyone improving from last year, and the freshman setting their marks early-on ... but there is still a lot of work to do before outdoor and championships." Speaking of the 4x400 Meter Relay squad for the women, the "A" team consisting of Sergeant, Jacquennee Flowers, Gibson and Tiffany Gordon finished in 11th place with a time of 4:09.98 for the event. On the men's side of things, Harold Rose, Jr. was the high man with an 8.73-second showing in the preliminaries of the 60 Meter Hurdles. Teammate and sophomore Craig Johnson finished in 15th place for the `Cats in the shot put with a distance of 13.21m (43-04.25).
Cecil Robertson helped out on the track in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 51.54 seconds to earn a 20th position showing on the day. "The men are still coming around for us," admitted Ellenwood afterwards. "They are running at a better pace than they were last year this time, but I want them to keep improving so we can have a positive showcase at the MEAC Championships. At this point we are working towards getting better for the outdoor season with a good indoor schedule." Bethune-Cookman College will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Gainesville, Fla. for the Gator Invitational at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the campus of the University of Florida. The `Cats are looking for a more positive showing this time around than they had two weeks ago in Gainesville, though that--according to Ellenwood, was good for their first competition. The action begins on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. For ticket information, please log on to the University of Florida athletic website at www.Gatorzone.com. |
