Randy Thomas Named NCAA Northeast Regional Women's Coach of the Year

Nov. 17, 2006

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College cross country head coach Randy Thomas was named Northeast Regional Women's Coach of the Year on Thursday by the USTFCCCA. This is the second consecutive year he has been honored, and the third time in his career at Boston College. Thomas led the Eagles to a victory in the NCAA Northeast Regional last weekend. Mallory Champa, Nichole Lister, Kristen Coon, Jessica Flinn and Brielle Chabot finished in the top 24 in the race and earned All-Regional honors. By capturing this title, Boston College earned an automatic berth to the NCAA National Championships on November 20.

Thomas is in his 14th year as the director of the cross country and track and field teams at Boston College. This will be the ninth women's team Thomas has led to the NCAA meet. His tenure has produced 46 All-America selections, and brought the first national championship to women's athletics at the Heights, coaching Shannon Smith to the 2001 NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter run. Thomas was also named the 2001 Track and Field Association National Cross Country Coach of the Year.

A former member of the United States National Cross Country Team, Thomas has held several world-records, including the 10-mile, 20-kilometer and the 30-kilometer events.

The 16th-ranked women's cross country team will be competing at the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Monday, November 20. The meet is hosted by Indiana State University.
