Coed Sailing Takes Third At St. Mary's Team Race Intersectional

March 14, 2005

Coming off of a week of spring training in Miami, the coed team finished 3rd behind home team St. Mary's and Georgetown. The Eagles missed an opportunity to win the regatta when they went head to head to with St. Mary's in the last race.

Rounding the last mark of the race, the BC Seniors - Ben Gent/Caitlin Gill, Jeff Bonanni/Jen Doyle, and Frank Ustach/Joy MacDougall - had a comfortable lead in the race. Failure to cover aggressively proved costly and St. Mary's was able to slow the Eagles and eventually go on to win the race and the regatta, forcing a tie for second between Georgetown and BC.

In the "sail-off" race, the Eagles crossed the finish line in a winning combination, but the Hoyas had suffered a breakdown and the judges ordered a re-sail. Georgetown was in the drivers seat of the re-sailed race from the start and although the Eagles had a chance at the final mark, the Hoyas light-air boathandling was enough to give them a victory - dropping BC to third.

The Coed team's team racing record this year now stands at 3 intersectional victories and one 3rd place finish - among the best in the country.

Leigh Kempton `08/Lizz McAlpine '06 made their women's intersectional debut in B division at the Navy Women's Spring Intersectional. Kempton/McAlpine ended day one just one point out of first in B division.

Maura Winston `06/Leland McManus '06 also got off to a good start in A division and the Eagles were just ten points out of first at the end of the first day. Day two proved difficult with strong current and light wind.

The Eagles had dropped to 7th overall by the end of racing, struggling in A division, and picking up a foul late in the last race in B division. Despite the foul, Kempton/McAlpine managed to finish third in B division, a respectable first outing at the intersectional level
