SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Baylor men's golf team waited a little too long to turn it on, firing an tremendous 4-over par 284, the fifth-lowest round of the day, to end their season with a tie for 17th after the final round of the NCAA Central Regional hosted by Notre Dame Saturday at the 7,011-yard, par-70 Warren Golf Course.

Sophomore Colton Turnquist (Austin, Texas) was on fire as he carded a career-low 64, the lowest individual round of the entire tournament, to tie for 20th and lead the Bears with a 54-hole total of 215. With the Bears starting from the 10th tee, Turnquist got his day rolling with a birdie on 11, then gave the stroke back with a bogey on 12. From that point, Turnquist was flawless for the last 15 holes, answering back with back-to-back birdies on 13 and 14 and adding another on 17 to make the turn at 3-under par. On the back nine, he made birdies on two, five and seven to finish the day 6-under par.

Sophomore Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) tied for 66th with a score of 222 and finishing up with a 1-over par 71. Frye started the day with a bogey on 10, but birdied 16 and 17 and bogeyed 18 to make the turn at even-par. Frye's only blemish on the back nine was a bogey on six.

Redshirt freshman Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) closed the tournament with a 74 and tied for 72nd at 223. Williams fought hard all day, birdying 15 and 17 after a triple bogey on 14. Williams bogeyed two and double-bogeyed three, but came back with a birdie on the par-three fourth. A bogey on eight left him 4-over.

Sophomore Chase Thomas (Dallas, Texas) tied for 108th at 230 and finished with an 81. Thomas struggled on the front nine, finishing eight over, then settled down on the back by going 3-over. Sophomore Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas), who was disqualified from the individual competition in the first round, fired a 75 to finish the tournament. Alcorn parred the first seven holes on both the front and back nines, but had bogey or worse on each of the last two holes on each side.

Augusta State claimed the regional title with a total of 9-over 849 and were led by the individual medalist, Kalle Edberg, who shot 5-under 205. Oklahoma State (858) finished second and Texas A&M (863) took third, while Tulsa and Kentucky tied for fourth, Arkansas and Missouri tied for sixth, SMU finished eighth and Texas finished ninth. Purdue defeated Wichita State in a one-hole playoff to earn the final spot in the NCAA Championships. Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin finished second, one stroke behind Edberg at 206, while Missouri's Ben Scott finished third at 207.

The top 10 teams and two individuals on teams not in the top 10 of each of the three 27-team regionals advanced to the NCAA Championships June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore, Md.
