Men's Golf Tied for 15th at NCAA West Regional

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Baylor men's golf team shot a 1-over par 289 and are currently tied for 15th Thursday after the first round of the NCAA West Regional at the 7,200-yard, par-72 Omni Tucson National Golf Club. Senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) is just two strokes off the individual lead, posting a 68. Baca was 4-under par and bogey-free through the first 14 holes, carding birdies on 10, 13, 16 and four. He bogeyed six, but got the stroke back with a birdie on eight and finished at 4-under par 68, trailing Utah's Dustin Primm, who posted a 66 and the Florida threesome of Matt Every, Billy Horschel and James Vargas, who shot 67. Baca is tied with six other players for sixth. Junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) got off to a slow start with bogeys on three of the first four holes, but enjoyed a terrific 11-hole stretch in which he shot 4-under par, including birdies on 15, 16, 18, one and five. Frye carded a bogey on seven to finish at even-par 72. Redshirt freshman Carmine Mediate (Southlake, Texas) teed off first for the Bears and got out to a quick start with an eagle on the par-5 10th. He bogeyed 11, but came back to birdie 15 before bogeying 17 to stand 1-under par through nine. On the front nine, Mediate bogeyed two, six and nine to finish at 2-over par 74. Junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) had a tough starting nine, shooting 5-over par with a pair of double bogeys, but finished strong on holes one through nine. Alcorn played blemish free over the last 10 holes and birdied two and six to finish at 3-over par 75. Junior Chase Thomas (Dallas, Texas) bogeyed the first two holes, but shot 2-under par over the next 12 holes with 10 pars and birdies on 15 and one. Thomas bogeyed six and double-bogeyed seven before rebounding with a birdie on eight and finished at 3-over par 75.
Florida set a torrid pace in the opening round, jumping out to a six-stroke lead at 15-under par 273. Arizona is in second at 279, while Fresno State is seven shots back at 280. Three teams each are tied for fourth, seventh and 10th, while the Bears are only five strokes out of the coveted top 10. The top 10 teams and two individuals advance to the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championships May 31-June 3 at Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.
