Men's Golfer Jeremy Alcorn Wins Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. - Baylor junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) fired a final-round 71 to claim the individual title by two strokes and lead the 12th-ranked Baylor men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Louisiana Classics Tuesday at the 7,002-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club.
Alcorn shot below par in all three rounds, shooting a 3-under 69 in the first round and a 5-under 67 in the second round, and gave the Bears their fourth straight individual and fifth overall for the year. The victory is the fifth of Alcorn's career, one behind the school's all-time leader senior teammate Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas), who has six.
Baca's streak ended at three straight victories as he tied for sixth. Baca shot a 2-over par 74, his first round above par this in nine spring rounds. He opened with a 4-under par 68, followed by a 71 and finished at 3-under 213. Junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) notched his third straight top-10 finish by also tying for sixth at 213. Frye finished with a 73 after an opening-round 72 and a second-round 68.
Sophomores Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) and Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) each tied for 22nd at 217. Williams shot a 75 after a 72-70 day Monday, while Meck carded a 74 after rounds of 70 and 73 yesterday.
Houston came from behind and shot 287 for a total of 18-under par 846 to clip Baylor, which shot 292 for a total of 17-under 847, by one stroke. Memphis finished third 11 strokes behind the Bears at 858, while SMU and Missouri tied for fourth at 860. Houston's Ricky Romano finished second to Alcorn, shooting 7-under 209 (68-68-73), while Memphis' Mike Regenold (69-74-67) and Houston's Kevin Newman (67-70-73) tied for third at 210.
The Bears, who fell just one stroke short of their third straight victory, return to action at the Border Olympics March 17-18 at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas. Baylor Individual Results 1.
