Dec. 18, 2002

Waco, Texas - New Baylor head football coach Guy Morriss announced Wednesday the signing of Montez Murphy to a National Letter of Intent to play football for the Bears in 2003. Murphy, a 6-5, 255-pound defensive end from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, will enroll at Baylor in January and be available for spring practice.

Murphy, a native of Centerville, Ill., attended East St. Louis High School where he played on both sides of the line. He was coached by Jeff Leiker at CCC and has three years of eligibility remaining at Baylor.

"Montez has a great deal of upside," Morriss said. "He's a talented young man who will be able to help our football team, both in terms of size and athletic ability. And it's always a plus when junior college players are able to enroll in time for spring practice. That's an important opportunity for them to learn what it takes to play at this level."
