Baylor Opposes NCAA's Friday Night Football Ruling
May 5, 2001 Waco, Texas - Baylor head football coach Kevin Steele and athletic director Tom Stanton announced Saturday the school's strong opposition to the NCAA's recent ruling to allow colleges to play football games on Friday nights. "It's unnecessary for colleges to play games on Friday nights. Friday nights are a staple of high school football across the country, and particularly here in Texas," Steele said. "It's important as institutions of higher learning that we support our high school students, administrators and coaches, not compete with them for attention on their night. "Baylor has absolutely no interest in playing football on Friday night, and hopefully the rest of the Big 12 Conference will take the same stance." Earlier this week, the NCAA eliminated a restriction that prohibited members from playing games that start after 7 p.m. on Fridays. "Baylor has a great relationship with the high schools in the state of Texas," Stanton said, "and we feel it's our duty as part of that relationship to not infringe upon Friday night high school football. The tradition of high schools playing on Fridays, colleges on Saturday s and the pros on Sundays has served the sport of football well for decades. We want to see that tradition continue."
All 11 of Baylor's 2001 football games are scheduled for Saturdays. The Bears open the season Sept. 8 at home against Arkansas State.
