WACO, Texas - Baylor basketball players Aaron Bruce, Hall Henderson, Tommy Swanson and director of basketball operations Stephen Brough participated in the "Too Cool for Trouble" program at G.L. Wiley Middle School Wednesday. "Too Cool for Trouble" is an after school program designed to provide a safe learning environment for students at risk of dropping out of school.

The athletes spoke to students about the importance of taking their academics seriously and respecting their teachers, parents and coaches. Swanson, a junior center, said he has faced peer pressure his whole life, and is still facing it now, but he encouraged the students to surround themselves with positive people to be successful in life.

Henderson, a freshman guard, challenged the students to sit in the front row of every class. He reminded the kids that they will never be able to go to college if they do not do well in school. He also stressed the importance of setting goals for themselves and working hard on and off the court.

"Set your goals high, so you have something to work for," Henderson said. Bruce, also a freshman guard, shared with the students his experiences growing up, leaving home at age sixteen to play basketball in another city, away from family and friends.

"Don't be embarrassed to ask for help or thank your teachers and volunteers. They are here for you," Bruce said. Coach Brough asked the kids what they were interested in and what they would be doing right now if they weren't at the school. He used their responses to illustrate his point of dreaming big, and making their dreams a reality.

"Figure out what you enjoy, and after you figure out what you enjoy, find a way to get paid for it."

The athletes concluded the event with choosing students out of the audience to participate in a free throw contest. The students and athletes took turns making shots, and the winners received a Baylor basketball t-shirt. All of the kids were able to receive a free poster signed by the players before they left.

Carolyn Nichols, Director of Lighted Schools, the program that sponsors "Too Cool for Trouble," is always excited to have Baylor students visit the middle schools.

"In the past when Baylor athletes have come out, you can really see what a difference it makes in the lives of the students. They are able to envision how it took the athletes' education to get where they are today, and the students can do the same if they apply themselves."

This school visit is just one example of how Baylor athletes and coaches are involved in many Waco community relations programs. For more information, please call Baylor Athletic Marketing at 710-3073.
