Oct. 14, 2006

BABSON PARK, Mass. -

Sophomore Courtney Farrell (Burlington, Mass.) factored into two key wins for Babson College as the Beavers defeated visiting Wheaton College, 5-4, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis contest on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Babson (5-7 overall, 3-4 NEWMAC) moved past the Lyons (7-4 overall, 3-4 NEWMAC) to secure the fifth seed in the upcoming conference tournament, which will be hosted by Wheaton on October 27 and 28.

Farrell and first-year Lorena Becerra (Key Biscayne, Fla.) claimed an 8-4 win at number one doubles, while junior Jamie Burke (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore captain Kali Hogan (Clinton, Mass.) prevailed by the same score at number three to give Babson a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Farrell then secured a 6-3, 6-2 win at one, sophomore Heather Walsh (Warwick, R.I.) added a 6-0, 6-2 victory at four, and first-year Liz Sheerin (Melrose, Mass.) notched a 6-1, 6-3 win at six to clinch the overall match for the Beavers.

Wheaton's four points came courtesy of wins by senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and junior Briana Jackson (Redding, Conn.) at second doubles, senior captain Jamie Weiss (Chicago, Ill.) at second singles, McDermott at third singles, and junior Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, Pa.) at fifth singles. The Lyons will now enter the NEWMAC Tournament as the sixth seed.
