ORANGE, Calif. - The Babson softball team kicked off its spring break trip to California with a tough loss on Wednesday, as the Beavers fell to #22 Williams College, 3-0. The loss dropped the Green and White's record to 3-4 overall, while Williams improved to 3-2. Babson squandered two key scoring chances early on, with the first coming in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Kaitlyn Clark led off with a double down the left field line, junior Jess Cohen followed with a walk, and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. However, Williams starter Morgan Simpson set down the next three batters in order to escape the jam. The Beavers threatened again in the top of the third, when sophomore Courtney Thurston reached on an infield hit with one out and advanced to third on a double to left by senior tri-captain Darcy Lantz. However, Simpson was again able to get out of trouble, inducing a sharp groundout to third and, following a walk that loaded the bases, an inning-ending strikeout. Those opportunities would prove to be crucial, as Simpson settled down to retire 12 of the final 13 hitters that she faced in the contest. Williams got all the runs it would need in the bottom of the second, when sophomore Libby Copeland-Halperin launched a two-out, two-run homer over the wall in left. The Ephs, who entered the game with six home runs in four games on the year, would tack on another long ball in the bottom of the third, as sophomore Emily Fowler-Cornfeld's fly ball cleared the short porch in right-center. That would prove to be enough as Simpson pitched the Ephs to the 3-0 victory.
Despite giving up the two homers, junior Jess Byrn was solid in defeat for Babson. The Beavers' righthanded hurler gave up three earned runs on four hits while walking three and striking out five in five innings of work. First-year Danielle Liska came on in the sixth to pitch a perfect inning of relief, striking out one. Lantz finished with two hits in defeat for the Beavers, who return to action Wednesday afternoon with a contest against Cal State East Bay. |
