Jan. 18, 2007 BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College women's basketball team built a 40-24 lead at halftime and then withstood a second-half comeback attempt by visiting Framingham State College as the Beavers claimed a 74-55 non-conference victory over the Rams on Thursday night. The victory was the fifth in the last six games for Babson (8-7), while the Rams (6-7) suffered their third straight loss. Senior Suzy Ward (North Attleboro, Mass.) led Babson with a double-double, as she finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, including nine off the offensive glass. Junior Caitlin Boulier (Wolcott, Conn.) finished with 17 points and three blocked shots, and junior Linsey Poulson (Leominster, Mass.) added 14 points and nine rebounds while shooting 6-for-8 from the floor. Senior co-captain Colleen Burke (Pittsfield, Mass.) also had a solid game for the Beavers, dishing out a game-high five assists. Junior Christina Bordini (Chelmsford, Mass.) paced Framingham State with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds. Junior Robin Morrow (Belmont, Mass.) added a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards, while senior so-captain Tea Siv (Easthampton, Mass.) finished with six points, six rebounds, and three assists for the Rams. Babson struggled from the field early on, shooting just 4-for-20 against Framingham State's zone defense in the opening nine minutes. The Beavers still managed to hold a three-point lead (13-10) with just under 11 minutes remaining in the opening half, and a 12-2 run over the next four minutes extended Babson's advantage to 25-12. Sophomore Becky Pelletier (Harwinton, Conn.) fueled the run by converting two key steals into fastbreak lay-ups, while Boulier added five points during that span. The Green and White continued to maintain a comfortable advantage throughout the remainder of the half, eventually taking a 40-24 lead into the break after Ward netted four points in the final 40 seconds of the period.
The Beavers pushed their lead to as many as 22 early in the second stanza, but Bordini converted a conventional three-point play to key a 10-0 Rams run that cut the visitors' deficit to 12 at 58-46. However, that would be as close as Framingham State would get the rest of the way, as Babson responded with a 10-1 barrage that effectively put the game away. |
