BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior Chase Lochmiller (Littleton, Colo.) scored the game-winning goal with 51 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lead the visiting MIT Engineers to a 1-0 upset of host Babson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer contest at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday afternoon. It was the first league win of the year for the Engineers, who improved to 7-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Beavers, ranked fourth in New England by the NSCAA, dropped to 10-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the conference. Both teams had strong scoring chances late in regulation, but neither could capitalize. Babson junior Tim Winn (Sutton, Mass.) momentarily got behind the MIT defense with 19:15 left in the session, but his quick turnaround shot just missed the upper right corner. MIT first-year Jason Zhu (Andover, Mass.) then broke free down the left side with 2:30 remaining, but his curving shot sailed wide of the right post. The Beavers had two great opportunities in the overtime session, with the first coming when first-year Harrison Heller's (Fort Wayne, Ind.) rocket from the left side of the box hit the crossbar and bounced out in the 92nd minute. Winn then hit a leaping shot from the middle of the box on a Harrison cross at the 94-minute mark, but his attempt sailed over the net. Babson nearly netted the game-winner late in the first overtime, but Winn was whistled offsides just before ripping a shot off the hands of diving junior goalie Tom Caldwell (East Berlin, Pa.) and in with 1:38 on the clock. MIT would take advantage moments later, as the Engineers tallied the decisive score on their next rush up the field. Lochmiller gained control at midfield and dished off to junior Nitin Perumbeti (Norcross, Ga.), who gave the ball right back to him at the top of the Babson box. Lochmiller then cut back across a defender and ripped a shot from 18 yards out that found its way past lunging senior keeper Chris Necklas (Guilford, Conn.) and into the lower right corner at 99:09.
Caldwell finished with five saves in net for MIT, including an outstanding diving catch of a redirected shot by Fogarty just over nine minutes into the game. Necklas also played well in goal for Babson, finishing with two saves. |
