Auburn Softball Trio Starts Action at Canada Cup
Auburn Softball Trio Starts Action at Canada Cup July 5, 2005 Currie highlighted the contingent's weekend, throwing 13 1/3 innings in a 1-0 loss to China on Monday. The Pisgah, Ala., native struck out 16 and walked two. The only run scored against her came on a one-out single in the bottom of the 14th. That came just two days after Currie started off the tournament with a seven-inning effort against the Schutt Hurricanes. She struck out seven and allowed just two runs * both unearned * as Florida lost, 2-1. In that game, Currie also batted against Schutt, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the third inning. Shaw and Walton, composing two-thirds of Auburn's starting outfield from a season ago, combined to spark the Florida Quicksilver's lineup from the bottom of the order. Shaw was 2-for-6 in two games on the first day of the tournament, then went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI in a 10-0 victory over the Bloomington Hearts on July 4. Walton started three of the four games over the weekend, posting a 1-for-4 effort against China on Monday. She pinch ran against Bloomington the same day, scoring a run. In Tuesday's action, Currie accounted for the Florida Quicksilver's only hit as Canada Elite strolled to a 7-0 victory. Her single came in the top of the first, but she was forced out at second a batter later. The Florida Quicksilver next take on Japan at 3:30 p.m. PST., Wednesday. They then play the Netherlands in their second game of the day with first pitch slated for 8:30 p.m. The 12th Canada Cup will come to a conclusion on July 10 at 6:30 p.m. PST. Each team will play eight games before moving on to the Championship Rounds, beginning on Friday. The Florida Quicksilver play in the White Division with the top four teams from both the White and Red Pools advancing to Championship Round play. Championship round play is double-elimination with only one contest for the final game.
