OXFORD, Miss. — Auburn soccer sophomore Sarah Steinmann and head coach Karen Richter have earned the Southeastern Conference’s highest honors as Steinmann was named as the Player of the Year and Richter was named the SEC Coach of the Year.

Steinmann, a forward from Lilburn, Ga., is first in the SEC in assists in conference play with five. She has also tallied six goals and nine assists overall this season to lead Auburn in points with 21. As an instrumental play-maker for the Tigers, Steinmann has helped lead Auburn to its first-ever SEC title in just her second season.

“This award is a huge reflection of Sarah’s play all season,” Richter said. “It is especially rewarding since she was double- and triple-teamed for most of our games. She just had a very well-rounded game all year and this award is well-deserved.”

Richter has led Auburn to a historical season in just her fourth year at the helm. The Naperville, Ill., native brought the Tigers up from a 12th place finish in the SEC in her first season, to regular season champs with a school record six SEC wins in 2002. Richter also led her team, with just two seniors and four juniors to a school record 14 wins overall.

Earlier this season, Richter earned her 100th career victory as a head coach when Auburn defeated South Alabama 4-0 on Sept. 15. Richter also, on an international level, has made history as she helped lead the U.S. Under-19 National team to a World Cup Championship title on Sept. 1, 2002 as an assistant coach.

In addition to Steinmann’s appointment to the All-SEC first team, junior defender Sandy Carnes and sophomore goalkeeper Megan Rivera were named to the All-SEC second team.

Carnes, a Spring, Texas, native, has been an invaluable defensive threat for the Tigers in 2002. Her dependable presence has helped keep opponents to a low 74 shots on goal in 19 games this season. Not only is Auburn’s goals against average the lowest in history, but the amount of saves Rivera has had to make are the lowest in history as well, by over 30.

Rivera, coming off her SEC Freshman of the Year appointment in 2001, has also broken numerous records for Auburn this season. The Miami, Fla., native has broken the school record for shutouts in a season with eight and shutouts in a career with 13. She has also helped, along with teammate Laura Snell, to break the team record for shutouts in a season with 10.

“Our team’s defense is a big reason for our success this year,” Richter said. “These two lead that defense and it is great to see them recognized for it.”

Auburn, the No. 1 seed, will take on No. 8 LSU in an 11:30 a.m. match on Thurs., Nov. 7 in Oxford, in the first round of the SEC tournament. Live action can be heard on www.AuburnTigers.com or on WAUD 1230 AM with play-by-play from Andy Burcham and color commentary from Chuck Gallina.
