Oct. 26, 2005 AUBURN, Ala. - Complete Release in PDF Format
The Auburn soccer team will put the finishing touches on the regular season on Friday night as the Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa for a 7 p.m. CT game with rival Alabama at the Alabama Soccer Complex. "You can throw records, seedings and rankings out the window when we play this game. Alabama is going to give us absolutely their best effort and it is going to be a great Alabama team," AU Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "(Alabama) Coach Staley always has his girls ready to play and he knows the importance of this game. I think they will play their typical hard, physical, man-to-man style and its going to be a war in Tuscaloosa." The Tigers (6-10-1, 5-5-0 SEC) will be looking to end the regular season on a high note but will have to go through their in-state rivals to do so. AU is on a streak in the series, however, having gone 4-0-1 over the last five contests with the Crimson Tide (7-8-2, 1-7-2 SEC), outscoring UA 10-3 in those five games. "This is a pride game," Hoppa said. "Last year's senior class finished undefeated against Alabama and I think this year's senior class is going to put a lot of pride into being able to say the same thing. We also have to bring the trophy to Tuscaloosa with us and we want to be able to bring it back to Auburn after the game. Hopefully the girls will be excited to play for that trophy." The trophy is the "Iron Bowl of Soccer" trophy, awarded to the winning team in this 12-year rivalry. Each year, the winner gets the winning score and the date of the game etched into the side of the trophy and gets to keep the trophy at their school until the next regular-season match. The Tigers have already qualified for next week's Southeastern Conference Tournament, which is being held at the Orange Beach Soccer Complex. Auburn will be the tournament's sixth seed but will await the outcome of Friday night's games to find out who its opponent will be. Fans wishing to listen to the game can tune into Nathan Ealy's call on WZMG 910 AM in the Auburn-Opelika area or on the internet at www.auburntigers.com. Live stats will also be available at www.rolltide.com.
