Soccer Looks To Claim Fifth SEC West Title On Senior Night Against Alabama On Friday
Oct. 25, 2006 AUBURN, Ala. - Complete Release in PDF Format
The Auburn soccer team will try and wrap up its fifth SEC Western Division title in the last six years on Friday night when the Tigers play host to Alabama in the final regular season match of the season at 7 p.m. CT. Auburn enters Friday's game in first place in the SEC West, a point ahead of Ole Miss, and can capture the title with a win over arch-rival Alabama at the Auburn Soccer Complex in the final game of the season for both squads. "It is amazing that it comes down to the last game of the year against Alabama," AU Head Coach Karen Hoppa said. "If we win, we win the West title. If we win, we guarantee a spot in Orange Beach (SEC Tournament). If we don't, we won't necessarily get either one of those things and it will depend on other teams losing. The great thing is we control our own destiny." Auburn is 10-4-3 on the season, 4-3-3 in conference play, while Alabama is 5-13-0, 1-9-0 SEC. "Obviously when Auburn and Alabama play you can't look at the rankings or records. We learned that last year (when Alabama won, 6-3, in Tuscaloosa). The good thing for us is it is at home and it's our senior night, so besides the West title and our postseason hopes, we also have our seniors to play for," Hoppa said. The seniors are Ronda Brooks, Anna Fiser, Amanda Garcia, Jac Schwarz, Kristin Stewart and Jenny Zarzour and they will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. Admission to the match, which has been dubbed All Auburn, All Orange Night, is free. The first 250 fans into the game will receive a "Beat Bama" t-shirt. "We need a big crowd," Hoppa said. "With so much on the line and with it being the senior's last home game, we need the crowd. Alabama is going to come to play and they will leave everything on the field. This is their season, so we need that 12th-man in the stands"
