AUBURN -- Auburn head soccer coach Karen Hoppa has been named to the staff of the Under-17 National Camp to be held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., July 18-25.
Hoppa's appointment as an assistant on staff is a continuation of her duties on the national soccer staff as she has worked since 1999 with various teams. In 1999 and 2000, Hoppa served as an assistant with the U.S. U-16 National Team, worked with the U-18 team in 2000, is currently the U.S. National Youth Goalkeeper Coordinator and served as an assistant on the U-19 National Team that won the Women's World Youth Championship in the fall of 2002 with current AU goalkeeper Megan Rivera.
The U-17 head coach David Smith and Hoppa will reunite, as the duo served as assistants on the U-19 team in 2002. Florida State's Patrick Baker will round out the staff as he joins Smith and Hoppa.
The team consists of 24 of the top U-17 women's players in the country. Games will be played Wednesday, July 21 and Saturday, July 24 as the team will scrimmage youth boys teams during camp.
Auburn will open the season Friday, Aug. 27 at home against Furman in a 7 p.m. match at the AU Soccer Complex.
